A drum-type miner having a plurality of water jet nozzles which cut independently of the mechanical bits is disclosed. The drum-type miner may configured in either a hard-head or a ripper-chain design. The unique combination of mechanical and hydraulic cutting results in higher rates of penetration and improved productivity. The nozzles in one embodiment are supplied on a transversely mounted strut and are supplied with high-pressure fluid through two independent water channels in the strut. The nozzles may be configured in different directions, such that the high-pressure fluid may be directed in several directions simultaneously, or configured to direct the high-pressure fluid in one direction only. Moreover, because the mining face is pre-scored by the water jets, the amount of wear on both the mechanical bits and the motors may be significantly reduced.

A method and apparatus for cutting a borehole substantially in the shape of a bread loaf within a mine includes four cutting systems. The first cutting system is a pair of three-armed, counter rotating, cutting heads which remove material from the mine face in a substantially vertical plane. The second cutting system is a pair of rotating cutting drums which follow the pair of counter rotating cutting heads. The third cutting system is a substantially vertical, rotating cutting head which removes the kerf formed at the ceiling or roof portion of the borehole. The fourth cutting system is a plow which both removes the kerf at the bottom of the borehole and directs the mined material to a conveyor system to remove the mined material from the mine.

A system for recovering methane gas from a coal seam and rock strata and other coal seams above a coal seam being mined or as has been previously mined. The system involves directionally drilling one or more degas holes from a surface location that curve to extend above and essentially parallel, near parallel or slanted to a coal seam to be mined or as has been previously mined. The degas hole is spaced an appropriate vertical distance above the coal seam, usually twenty (20) to two hundred (200) feet, depending on the mining technique being employed and rock strata characteristics. The degas hole is to draw methane gas under vacuum or pressure differential from the gob that is created when the overburden is collapsed. Multiple degas holes can be formed from the same surface location to run parallel to, across and even at an angle to a coal seam.

The drilling-information management system includes a probe assembly disposed on a drill rod, a first computer interoperably coupled to the probe assembly via a conductor disposed in a drill rod, and a second computer in communication with the first computer. The second computer includes a barcode scanner. The drilling-information management system includes a database in communication with the second computer. Drilling-project data is transferred from the database to the second computer and calibration data is transferred from the second computer to the first computer. The first computer executes a drilling plan according to the drilling-project data.

A horizontal remote mining system comprising a water jet cutting head, down hole crusher, jet pump, and guidance system for orchestrating select excavation of a horizontal borehole. The system is assembled on the end of a drill string comprised of multiple compartments accommodating various water pressures and functions in association with the remote excavation process. Selective tubing is also utilized to facilitate movement of air and ventilation of the borehole. In this manner, relatively thin coal seams can be economically mined.
