A reverse mode device is provided consisting of negative liquid crystal microdroplets dispersed in a non-homogeneous polymer matrix consisting of a monomer having a high reactivity and a high surface free energy and another monomer having a low reactivity and has a low surface free energy. The surface active monomer is preferentially distributed at the surface of microdroplets formed by phase separation, causing homeotropic alignment of the liquid crystals.
