    Abstract: A composite brake drum particularly adapted for motor vehicle applications. The brake drum includes a reinforcement assembly embedded within the cylindrical portion of the drum. The reinforcement assembly is preferably made from steel wire stock and includes a plurality of circular closed rings spaced axially within the brake drum cylindrical portion. axially extending locator wires are mechanically fastened to the reinforcing rings and serve to locate the rings. Loops can be formed on the locator wires for positioning the reinforcement assembly within a casting mold cavity to enable the device to be essentially self-locating within the mold. The composite brake drum is fabricated by pouring iron into the mold and then finish machining operations are performed.

    Abstract: A leaf spring is provided in which the major component is a leaf made up of continuous strands of fibers distributed in a matrix of polymerized plastic resin. The spring has a theoretical constant cross-sectional area and uniform width throughout its length and at the same time is thickest at its midportion and tapers to the opposite ends. The spring results in an arrangement having a cavity intermediate opposite ends and opposite sides which is capable of receiving locating pins or bolts of the type used with conventional metal leaf springs without the requirement for drilling of holes or otherwise weakening the structure. One embodiment of the invention incorporates a metallic leaf with the non-metallic components.

    Abstract: A bead lock device includes a plurality of bows and a frame for connecting the bows together to form an annular structure. The structure is placed in the interior of a tire which is placed onto a wheel. Wheel flanges compress the bows which, in turn, effectively lock the tire beads against the wheel flanges. A method of making a bead lock device by attaching bows onto a pair of flexible rods and joining the rods at their ends to form hoops is also disclosed.
