    Abstract: An information storage medium includes: a user data area for recording user data; a spare area including spare blocks each for replacing a defective block occurring in the user data area; and a defect management area in which information about the defective block occurring in the user data area is recorded, wherein the spare blocks of the spare area include usable spare blocks with replacement blocks existing in forward parts of the usable spare blocks in a usage order, and usable spare blocks without replacement blocks existing in forward parts of the usable spare blocks in the usage order, wherein a next available position pointer of the spare area is recorded in the defect management area, and the next available position pointer of the spare area indicates a first usable spare block from among the usable spare blocks without the replacement blocks existing in the forward parts of the usable spare blocks in the usage order.

    Abstract: An information recording medium includes a lead-in area, a user data area, and a lead-out area, wherein at least one of the lead-in or lead-out areas includes a compatibility information area in which compatibility information, specifying whether each area on the information recording medium is recordable and/or reproducible. The compatibility information may include state information on whether the user data area is recordable and/or reproducible, state information on whether the lead-in/lead-out area is recordable and/or reproducible, state information on whether the compatibility information area is recordable and/or reproducible, or state information on whether a defect management area (DMA) is recordable and/or reproducible. Accordingly, an existing drive or apparatus for recording and/or reproducing data on and/or from an information recording medium can smoothly record and/or reproduce data on an information recording medium that is of a higher version than the existing drive or apparatus.

The reproducing apparatus includes a recording/reading unit that records data on or reads data from a disc including a defect management area in which defect information regarding data recorded in a data area of the disc and defect management information for managing the defect information are repeatedly recorded, and a controller that controls the recording/reading unit to read the defect information and the defect management information from the defect management area, and read data from the disc using the defect information.     Abstract: An apparatus configured to write input data on an optical recording medium using a write pulse waveform including a first pulse, a last pulse and a multi-pulse train is provided. The apparatus includes a discriminator configured to discriminate a magnitude of a present mark, a magnitude of a leading space, and a magnitude of a trailing space from the input data, a write waveform controller configured to control the write pulse waveform based on a grouping table, the grouping table being configured to store rising edge data of the first pulse of the write pulse waveform grouped in corresponding pulse groups according to magnitudes of a plurality of present marks and magnitudes of a plurality of spaces adjacent to the plurality of present marks, the write pulse waveform being controlled to generate an adaptive write pulse waveform by varying a position of a rising edge of a first pulse of the mark to be written according to at least the magnitudes of the present mark and the leading space, and a processor configured to process the input data on the optical recording medium using the adaptive write pulse waveform. The discriminator is further configured to apply the magnitude of the present mark, the magnitude of the leading space, and the magnitude of the trailing space to the write waveform controller. The width of the first pulse is varied by varying the position of the rising edge.
