Abstract: A foodstuff is coated with particulate material by transferring the particulate material from a first conveyor travelling in one direction onto the foodstuff being transported on a first belt of a second conveyor located below the first conveyor which travels in the direction opposite to the first conveyor. While the coated foodstuff is transferred to a second belt of the second conveyor, particulate material falls off the first belt through a gap between the first belt and the second belt onto an inclined portion of the second belt. The particulate material is conveyed to the horizontal upper run of the second belt which forms a layer on which the coated foodstuff lies for being coated on a bottom side after being transported to the second belt. The coated foodstuff is then transferred from the second belt to the third belt of the second conveyor, with further particulate material falling through the gap between the second and third belts onto the inside wall of a drum. The drum is rotated for transporting the further material to a position above the first conveyor upon which the material falls by gravity.

Abstract: Apparatus for coating a foodstuff with particulate material includes a drum capable of rotating about a substantially horizontal longitudinal axis, and two horizontal conveyors, one positioned above the other, adapted to travel longitudinally in opposite directions through the drum. The lower conveyor has at least three successive endless conveyor belts having horizontal upper runs and a gap between each successive pair of belts. The second belt has an inclined portion below the first belt and the gap between the second and third belts is situated within the horizontal drum. The apparatus also contains means for feeding particulate material onto the upper conveyor and means for feeding the foodstuff onto the first belt of the lower conveyor. Particulate material is transferred from the upper conveyor onto the foodstuff on the first belt, excess particulate material falls off the forward end of the first belt onto the inclined portion of the second belt and is conveyed to the horizontal portion of the second belt to form a layer on which the foodstuff lies after being transported from the first belt to the upper run of the second belt, and further excess particulate material falls through the gap between the second and third conveyor belts onto the lower part of the inside wall of the horizontal drum from where it travels upwards on the inside wall until it reaches a position above the upper conveyor onto which the particulate material falls by gravity.

Abstract: Food products are packaged with a conveyor for carrying the food products to be packaged and a conveyor adapted to travel discontinuously for carrying open-topped containers beneath the leading edge of the food-product carrying conveyor at which point the container-carrying conveyor is inclined downwards in the direction of travel at an acute angle of less than 60.degree. to the horizontal so that the food product articles which fall off the leading edge of the food-carrying conveyor are consecutively received by for filling the container in a compact row with the food product articles. Abstract: Portions of a product are obtained from a supply of the product and are weighed and distributed by an apparatus having a plurality of picking units, a computer and a distribution device. Each picking unit provides for gripping and removing a portion of a product from a supply of the product, for weighing and recording the weight of the removed, gripped portion, and for feeding the recorded weight of the removed, gripped portion to the computer. Abstract: An apparatus for coating a foodstuff with a particulate material has an endless meshed conveyor belt which is trained about a hollowed roller which has a longitudinally extending wall having apertures therethrough and about which the belt travels from a lower return run to an upper forward run. A baffle is positioned beneath at least a portion of the lower return run of the belt and is arced from the lower return belt run towards the upper forward belt run. A rotatable shaft from which radial wings protrude is positioned within the hollowed roller interior. Meshes of the belt, the apertures of the roller, and the wings are configured and positioned and the wings protrude from the shaft for a length sufficient so that, in operation, upon rotation of the roller and entrainment of the belt and rotation of the shaft and wings, meshes of the belt align with apertures of the roller, and wings align with the aligned roller apertures and belt meshes for at least a portion of a region of the roller about which the belt is trained and extend through the aligned roller apertures and belt meshes towards the baffle.
