According to the invention, simple measuring apparatus (10) is produced which is designed to ascertain if a so-called spring strut (50) appertaining to the front wheel suspension in a vehicle has been deformed or more specifically if it has been bent, the apparatus being designed to be used primarily on wheels equipped with disc brakes. The apparatus is used in situ, i.e. on a spring strut (50) mounted in place in the vehicle, and it is necessary only for the wheel to be removed, with the tire and rim, so that the disc brake (40) is exposed. The measuring apparatus consists of an upright (12) which is attached to a base part (14, 20) designed to be attached, preferably by means of permanent magnets (24, 26), to the outside of the brake disc (40). The upright (12) bears movably a measuring arm (30) equipped with a length scale and projecting out from the upright (12) at right angles to the plane of the brake disc (40); this arm also bears movably a pointer device ( 36) which can be made to seek out the center (60) of the upper fixing (55) of the spring strut (50) in the bodywork. After this adjustment, the perpendicular distance (a) from the fixing center (60) to the plane of the brake disc (40) can be read off on the scale on the measuring arm (30). From the knowledge of this distance it can be established whether or not the spring strut (50) has been deformed (bent).

The invention relates to a method and a device for controlling the refractive index in the core of an optical fiber. According to the invention, an optical fiber is provided with a longitudinal electrode running along the core of the fiber. An electric current is passed through the electrode to induce ohmic heating thereof, causing thermal expansion and consequently a compressing force upon the core of the fiber. This compression of the core leads to induced changes in the refractive index in the direction of the compressing force, and hence induces or alters birefringence in the core.

SOLUTION: A core region 11 is a region of a circular shape in cross section disposed at the center of an optical fiber 10 and has a refractive index n1. A clad region 12 is a region disposed around this core region 11 and has a refractive index n2 smaller than the refractive index n1 of the core region 11. A pair of conductive parts 13a and 13b are respectively symmetrical with each other with respect to the optical axis center and are disposed within the clad region 12 over a specified range in a longitudinal direction. When current is passed to a pair of the conductive parts 13a and 13b, respectively, a stress is generated therein and a strain is generated in the core region 11 and the clad region 12. The propagation light propagated in the optical fiber 10 is controlled in the polarization state according to this strain.

The bench-coacting holding devices (5, 18) include positionally adjustable means (10, 17) which are intended to coact with specific points of the new vehicle part, the positions of these points in space relative to the vehicle being known. In this regard, the positions in space of the positionally adjustable means are set with the aid of separate measuring equipment. The invention also relates to an arrangement for use when carrying out the method.
