The anvil has two moving parts, one moving back and forth parallel to the fixed sonotrode face, and the other moving up and down normal to the fixed face. The moving parts carry the side walls of the anvil and with the fixed face provide an adjustable space for wires of various sizes, the space having a rectangular cross section. The anvil is disposed with its longitudinal axis coaxially with the longitudinal axis of the sonotrode, and the cross-sections of the compaction spaces can be simultaneously varied by rotation of the anvil relative to the sonotrode about the common longitudinal axis, so that a plurality of strand ends can be simultaneously welded by only one anvil. Several alternatives for the rotational drive of the anvil are also described.

In an apparatus intended especially for connecting electrical conductors by ultrasonic welding, in which a two-part anvil comprising three working surfaces is associated with a sonotrode for defining a compaction chamber on all sides, the two anvil parts are moveable in two different directions relative to each other and the sonotrode and are each driven by a pneumatic cylinder and piston assembly. To achieve an easily handled apparatus, the two pneumatic cylinders are disposed alongside each other axially parallel to each other and to the central axis of the sonotrode in a housing and act upon transmission elements, which deflect the working movements of the pneumatic pistons through a right angle into the anvil parts. As a result the apparatus has a slender external form of small dimensions and enables a pistol grip handle to be fitted, by a trigger of which the functional parts of the apparatus are controlled. In a further embodiment the housing can be releasably connected either to a pistol grip-like handle or to a coupling element.

A process for the production of an electrically conducting and mechanically solid connection between armature coil wires and hooks on the lamellas of a commutator comprising 1) laying the insulated wires around the hooks of the lamellas without stripping the insulation; 2) before bending back the hooks, at least partially destroying by thermal and/or mechanical abrading means, the varnish insulating on the wires; 3) removing the residues or remnants of the varnish insulation layer during the bending back of the hooks, by ultrasonic oscillations; 4) squeezing the removed varnish into a wedge-shaped space formed between the winding wire, the internal surface of the hook and the surface of the commutator; and 5) ultrasonically welding the hook ends to the lamellas. Variously constructed devices for the execution of the process are also proposed.
