An embodiment of the present invention provides an apparatus, comprising a transceiver capable of dynamic cluster-based sleep/wake scheduling using hierarchical routing, cluster formation, and sleep-wake synchronization. The hierarchical routing may comprise a sink node capable of sending periodic route updates, which may propagate through a network to regular nodes and the route updates may include metrics allowing the regular nodes to select a “best” path to the sink node. The metrics may include hop count or end-to-end reliability and the regular node may track a next hop which optimizes the metric; and packets originating or forwarded by the regular node to the sink node may be sent to the next hop. Further, the route updates may propagate across a backbone network to cluster heads.

A sensor device may use battery power to operate a sensor node by taking sensor readings and transferring data into or out of a set of queues. A radio frequency identification (RFID) tag may be used to wirelessly communicate data into and/or out of the sensor device without using power from the battery. The sensor node may be placed in a low-power mode without respect whether the RFID tag is communicating. In some embodiments, the sensor device may be used as a store-and-forward node for other devices by placing data received from one RFID reader into the set of queues and later transmitting the data from the set of queues in response to a poll from another RFID reader.

The next-hop node and associated transmission channel may be selected from the destination node matrix based on the bottleneck channel.
