摘要:
A file format and a reader for electronic periodicals composed a digital replica of a hardcopy of a periodical. The file format includes a plurality of primarily text-only files corresponding to articles in the digital replica. The reader displays the digital replica, and when a user activates a control to select an article, a separate view is displayed that displays the text only version of the selected article. In this view the text of the article appears linearly, from beginning to end, and is presented as a continuous, sequential text file.

Mobile devices are described, along with related services, systems, and methods. These devices include displays with pixel dimensions and pixel densities in ranges that are chosen to allow users to enjoy a more intuitive and more “desktop-like” Web or multi-media experience compared to other devices, while still enabling the devices to be pocketsize. Also described are devices with touch sensitive areas on the edges or back that let users efficiently and intuitively control some behaviors of the devices by touching the touch sensitive areas in certain ways. Embodiments of the present invention reduces the need for mechanical controls, which enables keeping the frame around the device's display unusually narrow, thereby permitting larger displays without increasing the overall sizes of the devices.

A system and method provides a user interface on an electronic device with a listing of the most recently used or viewed items that is organized by the category of item. A menu containing the most recently read items is separated into separate categories such as books and periodicals. The menu displays the most recently opened item in each of the categories. In this manner, one category will not dominate over the other categories on the menu.

A virtual touch interface solution is provided that fits on a pocket-size device or even palm-size device and uses the standard keyboard layout with straight rows of keys, which is achieved while making the interaction accurate, fast, and comfortable. In some versions, while the user presses a finger down on the touch-screen display and the finger thereby covers information on a portion of the display, displaying second information in a box or “bubble”, the box or “bubble” positioned away from a point at which the finger is pressed so as to not be covered by the user's finger and so as to help the user properly position their finger on a target virtual selectable item.
摘要:
A system and method for controlling a user interface display that de-emphasizes a background image of a physical display. The system and method draws a pattern, preferably a checkered pattern, of black and transparent pixels over the background image. The system and method mitigates any jarring effect of the prior art of driving all of the display to black. Although in the preferred embodiment, the checkered pattern alternates pixels between black and transparent, any pattern that drives less than substantially all of the pixels to black is suitable.
摘要:
A system and method for organizing new content on the user interface of an electronic device. Graphical representations (e.g., book or album covers or icons) representing the content that the user is most likely going to want to open next are presented on a virtual shelf on the user interface of the device. The graphical representations are preferably organized in receding order of likelihood of opening from left to right. As new items appear on the virtual shelf, older items are shifted to the right. A limited number of items (graphical representations) can be depicted at one time on the virtual shelf on the display of the device. The shelf can be scrolled left and right to view all of the items on the shelf.

摘要:
A system and method for displaying periodical digital content. A device sorts and organizes the periodical content stored on the device according to the title of the periodical and further according the dates of the periodicals. Each periodical, e.g., newspapers and magazines, after sorting, are displayed on the device's user interface on its own virtual shelf according to the periodical, and then preferably in chronological order within the shelf that is dedicated to the periodical. Alternatively, the periodicals are sorted by issue date, and virtual shelves are dedicated specific date ranges, e.g., “Today,” “This Week,” “This Month.”
