Abstract: A medical system includes an input assembly for receiving one or more user inputs. The input assembly includes at least one slider assembly for providing an input signal. Processing logic receives the input signal from the input assembly and provides a first output signal and a second output signal. A display assembly is configured to receive, at least in part, the first output signal from the processing logic and render information viewable by the user. The second output signal is provided to one or more medical system components. The information rendered on the display assembly may be manipulatable by the user and at least a portion of the information rendered may be magnified.

Abstract: An input mechanism for a portable electronic device includes a rotational manipulation mechanism, such as a cap or shaft. The input mechanism also includes a sensor having first capacitive elements coupled to the manipulation mechanism, second capacitive elements, and a dielectric positioned between the first and second capacitive elements. Movement of the manipulation mechanism alters the positions of the first and second capacitive elements with respect to each other and is determinable based on capacitance changes resulting therefrom. In some implementations, the second capacitive elements may be part of an inner ring or partial ring nested at least partially within an outer ring or partial ring.

Abstract: A touch-scroll apparatus can provide touch-scroll input/functionality, such as for a mobile communication device (as an example application). The touch-scroll apparatus includes a multi-coil sensor assembly including multiple sense inductor coils (for example, three). A sensor slot is formed in a portion of the device case (such as a device side-wall), defining a touch-scrolling surface/area at the exterior of the device. The sidewall slot is dimensioned to receive and position the touch-scrolling multi-coil sensor assembly relative to the touch-scrolling surface/area. Inductive sensor electronics is coupled to the multiple touch-scroll sense inductor coils to detect scrolling movement and direction based on signal output from the sensor inductor coil signals (such as changes in coil inductance), including for each a peak signal corresponding to maximum deflection of the touch-scrolling surface/area opposite the sense inductor coil. The touch-scrolling sensor assembly can be secured within the sensor slot with elastomeric pads.

Abstract: An electronic device has a display and has a touch sensitive bezel surrounding the display. Areas on the bezel are designated for controls used to operate the electronic device. Visual guides corresponding to the controls are displayed on the display adjacent the areas of the bezel designated for the controls. Touch data is generated by the bezel when a user touches an area of the bezel. The device determines which of the controls has been selected based on which designated area is associated with the touch data from the bezel. The device then initiates the determined control. The device can have a sensor for determining the orientation of the device. Based on the orientation, the device can alter the areas designated on the bezel for the controls and can alter the location of the visual guides for the display so that they match the altered areas on the bezel.

Abstract: A touch sensing apparatus for dual (adjacent) touch buttons (areas) defined on a touch surface (such as a sidewall of a mobile communications device). The apparatus includes first and second touch sensor assemblies, each including a support structure, a mounting structure to mount the touch sensor assembly to the back-side of the surface, and a sense inductor coil disposed on one of the support structure and the mounting structure. The first touch sensor assembly mounted to the back-side of the surface opposite the first touch area. The second touch sensor assembly mounted to the back-side of the surface opposite the second touch area. The touch sensor assembly can be constructed with the sense inductor coil disposed on the support structure, such that deflection of the respective touch area causes the touch surface to deflect toward the sense inductor coil, or with the sense inductor coil is disposed on the mounting structure, such that deflection of the respective touch area causes the touch surface and the sense coil inductor to deflect toward the support structure.

Abstract: A touchscreen display includes a first planar surface that comprises a first value-indicating virtual button showing a first value displayed in a first area of the first planar surface, a touch sensor operably coupled with the first planar surface, wherein the touch sensor is configured to detect a touch within the first area of the first planar surface, a second planar surface that is non-coplanar with respect to the first planar surface, the first and second planar surfaces forming a first common edge, a first swipe sensor operably coupled with the second planar surface, wherein the first swipe sensor is configured to detect a swiping motion in a first direction or in a second direction along the second planar surface, the second direction being opposite the first direction. The touchscreen display can be implemented in a vehicle, such as an aircraft.
