Abstract: The interface between the plastic cover of a battery container and the lead or other metal terminal post which extends therethrough is sealed with a rubber bushing which is compressed and extruded along the terminal post during installation and locked tightly in its compressed and extruded state. The bushing preferably has a pair of oppositely angled intersecting frustoconical surfaces on its exterior surface which are adapted to cooperate with mating surfaces surrounding the opening in the cover and on a locking retainer. The assembly provides a flexible seal which will accommodate the inevitable vertical movement of the terminal post as a result of battery element expansion. Most importantly, the assembly provides an extremely effective barrier to the migration of electrolyte along the terminal post to prevent outer terminal corrosion. The rubber bushing is preferably impregnated with silicone oil which, when the bushing is installed, fills the surface voids in the cast terminal post which otherwise provide paths for electrolyte migration. The silicone oil also provides a lubricant for the controlled compression and extrusion of the bushing.

Abstract: An improved vent cap system for use in an electrochemical battery is provided which includes a ring flange for forming a ring seal between the vent cap assembly and the fill tube. When the vent cap assembly is positioned in the battery housing, the ring flange and the fill tube deform to create a seal therebetween to provide a fluid tight seal.

Abstract: A vent cap for use in a recombinant battery which includes a hollow barrel configured for gas-tight insertion into a vent hole in a battery cover. A retaining flange is formed at the closed end of the barrel, and a one-way relief valve formed on the barrel near its closed end. A layer of a polyalkylene explosion attenuating material surrounds the outside of the barrel below the flange and surrounding the relief valve. The polyalkylene material provides effective attenuation of explosions that occur in the vicinity of the relief valve. The invention further provides a vent cap assembly wherein the foregoing vent cap is mounted on a plastic vent cover of an otherwise conventional battery container.
