A conventional optical switching engine has difficulty in producing a universal multiport switching engine being capable of (i) programmatically changing regions to be switched, (ii) generating no wavelength dependent loss, (iii) having a small Walk-off, and (iv) being usable for small to large light beams. Produced is a light beam deflecting element in which a polarization grating is fitted in parallel on an N×M transmissive birefringence modulator formed such that a transmissive variable half-wavelength liquid crystal plate is divided into rectangular extreme small pixels, and many N and M pixels thus obtained are respectively arranged in X and Y axes directions in a matrix form, the polarization grating being a grating in which a period ∧ changes in an X′ axis direction (direction to which a birefringence axis rotates) in accordance with a wavelength width of light.

An object of this invention is to create an actuator in which the amount of deformation is maintained and no displacement in the reverse direction occurs, even when a constant voltage is continuously applied for a long period of time. As a means for achieving the above object, the invention provides a conductive thin film comprising a polymer gel containing at least one organic molecule selected from the group consisting of electron-donating organic molecules and electron-withdrawing organic molecules, a nano-carbon material, an ionic liquid, and a polymer.

The assay device (10) comprises a micro flow path (76); a porous medium provided near the distal end portion (80) of the micro flow path (76); and a space (82) provided between the micro flow path (76) and the porous medium for controlling the flow rate of a fluid moving from the micro flow path (76) to the space (82). After a fluid moved along the micro flow path (76) based on a lateral flow is brought into contact with the porous medium beyond the space (82) and is absorbed to the porous medium, the fluid is divided by the space (82) so that the fluid stays in the micro flow path (76). With this structure, it is possible to perform solution exchange in the micro flow path without using an external device such as a pump.

There are provided a piezoelectric body of ytterbium-doped aluminum nitride, having a greater piezoelectric coefficient d33 or g33 than those not doped with ytterbium, and a MEMS device using the piezoelectric body. The piezoelectric body is represented by a chemical formula Al1-xYbxN where a value of x is more than 0 and less than 0.37 and having a lattice constant ratio c/a in a range of 1.53 or more and less than 1.6. The piezoelectric body with such a configuration has a greater piezoelectric coefficient d33 or g33 than those not doped with ytterbium.
