摘要: A side air bag module including: an inflator (140), and air bag (102) and a retainer (150), the inflator having inflation ports (145) and a first and a second end (142, 144), the inflator configured to be inserted through a first opening of a first set of openings in an upper portion (104a) of a main panel (105) and configured to exit the upper portion of the main panel through a second opening of the first set of openings, wherein when the inflator is in place in the air bag, the first and second ends of the inflator respectively extend through one of the first and second openings, the main panel (105) also including a lower portion (104b) connectable to the upper portion thereby forming the main panel, a reinforcement panel (130) and the lower portion including similarly shaped, spaced and aligned sets of openings through which the inflator extends; the retainer is situated about the extending ends of the inflator on the exterior of the air bag.

摘要: A side impact head air bag (10) includes a plurality of spaced apart restraints (100, 102) for controlling the thickness of the air bag when inflated. In each restraint (100, 102), a circular stitching section (230, 260) joins an inner panel (70) and an outer panel (80) of the air bag (10). The stitching section (230, 260) defines a circular restraint section (200, 202) in each panel (70, 80). The stitching section (230, 260) blocks inflation fluid from flowing between the restraint sections (200, 202) of the restraints (100, 102). The tethers (100, 102) do not extend upon inflation of the air bag (10).

摘要: A rollover air bag system comprising: at least a first inflatable first chamber, the air bag adapted to be mounted within a passenger compartment of a vehicle in a manner such that when the air bag is inflated the first inflatable chamber is positioned to receive and protect the head of an occupant, an accumulator chamber located downstream of the first chamber, the accumulator chamber initially maintained at a negative pressure relative to the inflated first chamber, wherein in order to restrict the pressure in the first chamber from increasing upon impact with a body part of the occupant, the inflation gas in the first chamber is allowed to be pushed into the accumulator chamber.

摘要: A side impact air bag module (10) includes an air bag (12) having a body portion (330) which is inflatable into a position between a vehicle occupant and a side structure (54) of the vehicle (40). The air bag (12) and an inflator (14) are secured to a base plate (18) which supports the inflator and the air bag on the vehicle (40). A chute (24) is connected with the base plate (18) for storing the air bag (12) in the chute and for guiding the air bag to inflate into a position between the vehicle occupant and the vehicle side structure (54). A neck portion (300) of the air bag (12) is connected with the base plate (18) at a location outside of the chute (24). The neck portion (300) at least partially encloses the inflator (14) and directs inflation fluid into the body portion (330) to inflate the body portion. The neck portion (300) is impermeable to the inflation fluid.

摘要: The present invention provides a new and useful housing structure for an inflator, particularly an inflator for a vehicle air bag system. The inflator housing has a wall with gas dispensing nozzles extending through it. The wall is (i) relatively thick in certain areas (e.g., the nozzle area), to provide adequate resistance to gas pressures and thrust forces applied to the housing during operation of the inflator, and (ii) relatively thin in certain other areas, to reduce the weight of the inflator. The housing is preferably constructed of a lightweight material (e.g., aluminum). The housing configuration of the present invention helps further reduce the weight of the inflator, while not unduly reducing the strength of the inflator to withstand the gas pressures and thrust forces applied to the housing during operation of the inflator.
