Abstract:
An analog flame sense circuit is provided that utilizes the flame rectification method of sensing flame. The circuit uses an AC voltage source and discrete components to provide the sensing of the flame current. Either a single-pole or a two-pole filter may be used to smooth the generated sense voltage. A DC bias is provided to the filter to ensure a positive voltage. The circuit also includes a high-gain, high-impedance amplifier to translate the high impedance voltage of the sensing portion of the circuit to a relatively low impedance voltage for use by an electronic control circuit. In one embodiment, a high-gain emitter-follower amplifier constructed from two bi-polar junction transistors (BJTs) is used. An integrated Darlington configuration may be used, as well as a single BJT having a high gain, and an integrated operational amplifier.
Abstract:
An evaporator fan control system is provided for a multi-compartment refrigerator that coordinates operation of the evaporator fan among a cooling cycle for a freezer compartment, a cooling cycle for a fresh food compartment, and an adaptive defrost cycle. An adaptive defrost timer control module is utilized to coordinate operation of the evaporator fan. This control module includes an embedded electronic controller having control logic programmed to operate the evaporator fan whenever either of the thermostats requires cooling, and to lock out operation of the evaporator fan whenever the system is performing a defrost cycle.
Abstract:
A rotary drive mechanism for use with a timer/sequence switch in an appliance is presented. The mechanism converts linear motion from a cam tracker following a programmed cam track to rotary motion to drive a vent damper in an appliance. The rotary motion output is derived as a multiple of the input linear motion through a gear set. This input linear motion is translated to rotary motion imparted to a tracking rod, which is coupled through the gear set to an output actuating rod. Tracking by a tracking lobe is accommodated by a spring bias force applied though a bias lobe that counteracts the force applied by the cam track. Alternatively, tracking by a tracker is accommodated by a spring bias force applied through a torque arm of the tracking rod that also counteracts the force applied by the cam track.
Abstract:
A coolant flow valve for controlling the distribution and flow of coolant to replace the radiator thermostat and heater valve currently used in automotive applications. The valve includes a valve rotor rotationally received in a valve housing wherein the rotational orientation thereof determines which combination of flow paths through four different outlet ports is selected.

Abstract:
Upgraded firmware for a microcontroller is created and encrypted to construct a file (116) that can be distributed and installed by technicians in the field. The encryption includes character encryption (210) of the data as well as a second level of block encryption (216). Within the encrypted file (116), information about the firmware and the target microcontroller (104) is included. The distributed firmware file (116) is stored on a portable device, such as a PDA, that can communicate with the target microcontroller (104) to effect a firmware transfer from the PDA (112) to the microcontroller (104). The microcontroller (104) includes a programming routine that receives the encrypted data stream from the PDA and decrypts the data before storing the new firmware image. The programming routine also identifies when updating the firmware has left the firmware in an unusable condition and prevents operation of the microcontroller until the firmware is restored. Accordingly, the security of the firmware is maintained throughout the distribution and upgrade process and the integrity of the upgrade process is maintained as well.
Abstract:
A heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) device (104) which includes both heating and cooling operating modes provides an easy-to-use interface (110) for selecting the operating parameters of the device (104). The interface (110) allows the input of a setpoint temperature at which the HVAC device (104) conditions the ambient temperature of a space (102). A mode switch-over algorithm (200) uses the setpoint temperature, the sensed temperature from the conditioned space, and prestored threshold values that depend on the device's operating capacities, to determine when to change the device between heating and cooling modes. Also, within each of the respective modes, a heating (300) or cooling (400) algorithm controls the engaging and disengaging of the heating and cooling elements of the device (104) to maintain the temperature of the conditioned space (102) within a desired comfort zone.
