A composite long rod penetrator formed from depleted uranium and titanium s a longitudinal hardness gradient created by reinforcing the long rod with tungsten wire filaments. The longitudinal hardness gradient increases in hardness from a minimum value at the forward ogive end to a maximum value at the aft end. The longitudinal hardness gradient causes the long rod penetrator to exhibit optimum initial penetrating capabilities at high impact velocities and then after impact and some erosion exhibits superior penetrating capabilites at lesser velocities.

A method is provided for preparing a supported catalyst composed of a structural substrate having an adherent, coherent, coating of a catalytic material which comprises applying on the substrate a dispersion comprising a stabilized colloidal silica solution having dispersed therein a fine metal powder which contains at least two of the metals nickel, chromium, and copper as mixtures or alloys or a combination thereof, and firing the coated substrate in a protective atmosphere at an elevated sintering temperature to form an adherent, coherent, coating.

A process for coating the inside diameter of a tube utilizes a coated manl which has been first coated in a Ni Cr Al Y slurry, air dried, vacuum sintered, and then inserted in a tube. A mandrel-tube assembly is then swaged and resintered under vacuum conditions. The sintered mandrel-tube assembly is first drilled and then chemically etched to remove remaining mandrel material.

A process of slurry coating particularly adapted to coatings less than one mil thick wherein a basis metal is coated with particles of a second metal dispersed in a liquid containing alkali-stabilized silica sol as the predominate film forming ingredient. The coated basis metal is dried; the coating is sintered thereon and then is worked. Provided that the silica to metal ratio is within a special range, residual silica in the coating metal does not interfere with working.
