    摘要: A cushioning conversion machine (20) including a conversion assembly (30) which converts a continuous sheet of multi-ply stock material (22) into a three dimensional cushioning product (32) and a stock supply assembly (550) which supplies the multi-ply stock material (22) to the conversion assembly (30). The conversion assembly (30) includes a forming assembly (52) which inwardly turns lateral portions of the stock material (22) as the stock material (22) travels therethrough in a downstream direction. The stock supply assembly (550) includes a separating device (574) and/or constant-entry device (580) designed to minimize tearing due to excessive tension in the lateral regions of the stock material (22). Additionally or alternatively, the forming assembly (52) includes a shaping member (590) having protrusions in its turning perimeter and/or holding surface to modify the shape of the cushioning product. Another embodiment of stock supply assembly (350) includes a stock-dispensing device (370) which dispenses the multi-ply stock material (22) from a continuous sheet thereof and a transversely extending member which is positioned to engage at least one of the plies of the dispensed multi-ply stock material (22). The transversely extending member has end portions which are inwardly tapered relative to the central portions of the member and towards the adjacent ends of the member. The inwardly tapered lateral end portions being positioned to engage the ends of the lateral portions of the at least one ply of the stock material (22).

Additionally, the upstream assemblies feed the sheet stock material at a feed rate greater than the feed rate at which the downstream assembly passes the sheet stock material. The downstream assembly thereby cooperates with the upstream assemblies to crumple the stock material and impart loft thereto, and as a further result, the crumpled stock material includes a regular arrangement of folds preferably forming a herringbone pattern.

The machine and method are characterized by the use of a web of flat-folded sheet-like stock material of one or more plies and an expanding device which is operative to open up, or "expand", the flat folded stock material before passage through a crumpling and/or connecting device which also preferably functions to advance the stock material through the machine. The invention also provides a flat folded web of stock supply including at least one ply of sheet-like stock material having portions thereof folded upon themselves along the length of the stock material.

    摘要: A novel loading assembly for a cushioning conversion machine that eliminates the need to manually thread the stock material through the former of the machine. The loading assembly is disposed at one end of the machine and feeds the stock material through the former to the machine's feed assembly. Hence, a cushioning conversion machine and method for converting a stock material into a cushioning product comprises a former assembly which forms the stock material into a strip of cushioning; a downstream feed assembly located at a downstream end of the former assembly which feeds the strip of cushioning passing therethrough; a loader feed assembly located at an upstream end of the former assembly, the loader feed assembly which, when engaged, feeds the stock material through the former assembly to the feed assembly; and a loader operator assembly for selectively engaging and disengaging the loading assembly. The loader operator assembly includes a lever movable between a non-load and load position, and a position detect device which, when the lever is in its load position, effects energization of the upstream feed assembly. The loader feed assembly includes opposed rollers relatively movable towards and away from one another, and the loader operator moves the opposed rollers towards and away from one another between engaged and disengaged positions. A crank is provided for rotating at least one of the opposed rollers, the crank being connected to a shaft on which said one roller is mounted for rotation with the shaft.

The cutting assembly includes an end plate, a first blade mounted on the end plate, a second blade also mounted on the end plate and positioned to coact with the first blade to cut such coined strip into cut sections, a motor for powering the cutting assembly, a cutter linkage connected to one of the blades, a drive linkage pivotally connected to the cutter linkage, a motion disk connected to the drive linkage; and a shaft connecting the motion disk to the motor.

The machine comprises front and rear units having separate housings. The housing of the rear unit includes an outer shell having a converging chute surrounding a shaping member over which sheet-like stock material is drawn to form the stock material into a three-dimensional shape. The front unit includes in the housing thereof a feed mechanism for drawing the stock material over the shaping member and stitching the shaped material to form a strip of dunnage product.
