    摘要: Methods are described for improving flow of oil containing fluids through vessels, pipelines, heat exchangers, and other equipment. Polymeric surfactants with lipophilic head groups and long hydrophilic poly(ethene oxide) tails are added to the fluid to coat the oil and metal surfaces with drag reducing aqueous filaments, allowing the oil to slip past those surfaces without sticking and with little resistance. Such surface coatings also promote coalescence of viscous emulsions of water-in-oil or oil-in-water without creating oil-wet flow blocking residues on stationary surfaces. Such fouling obstructs the flow of oil and water and results in both material and energy losses.

    摘要: A small-scale, batch-wise device to simulate high-shear, short-duration emulsification of fluids from various industrial processes at elevated temperatures and pressures for the purpose of determining the quality and stability of those emulsions under different conditions and with different additives. A threaded, transparent tube capable high temperature and pressure is fitted with a threaded bearing with a shaft sealed gas tight at two points with spring-loaded, internally-facing, open rings. A socket head on the external end of the shaft held on a high-speed motor-drive rotates mixing blades on the internal end of the shaft. Process fluids and additives are added to the tube with a vaporizing liquid. The tube is sealed, heated to the process temperature under pressure, then inverted onto the motor drive, by which the blades are rotated at high-speed for a short duration. The tube is righted and the emulsion observed over time at process temperature under pressure.

    摘要: Methods and apparatus are provided for reaction wheel (RW) assemblies for spacecraft. The apparatus comprises a M/G coupled to an inertia wheel and a controller coupled to the M/G that, in response to commands it receives, couples power to or from an M/G of another RW assembly over a shared transfer connection (VXFR), so that one M/G acts as a generator powering another M/G acting as a motor. The controller compares generator voltage VGEN to the BEMF of the motor on VXFR and reconfigures a multi-winding M/G or steps-up the generated voltage to maintain VGEN>VXFR to maximize direct energy transfer from one RW to the other as long as possible. When VGEN declines sufficiently, the controller can couple the motor to the spacecraft power bus and/or the generator to a power dump so as to continue to provide the commanded torque if needed. Operation is automatic.

    摘要: A magnetostrictive fuel level probe includes a spring-loaded foot. The probe shaft of the fuel level probe moves up and down within the spring-loaded foot as a function of fuel density. The spring-loaded foot includes a reference magnet whose height relative to the bottom of a fuel storage tank is fixed. Currents generated by the fuel level probe allow measurement of how much of the fuel level probe is positioned above the reference magnet, and from this measurement, the buoyancy of the fuel level probe may be measured. From the buoyancy of the fuel level probe, the fuel density may be calculated.
