Apparatus for introducing a catheter percutaneously into the body of a living being. The apparatus comprises a tubular member having a distal end portion and a proximal end portion. The proximal end portion is in the form of a hollow housing for a hemostatic valve assembly comprising a lubricant reservoir and a valve element. The reservoir is formed of a foam material impregnated with a lubricant liquid, e.g., silicone. The valve element is a disk-like member formed of resilient material, e.g., silicone impregnated with polydimethylsiloxane, located distally of the reservoir and has a openable passageway extending through it for the catheter to pass. The reservoir applies the lubricating fluid-in a controlled manner onto the catheter as it is passed through it, to thereby facilitate the passage of the catheter through the openable passageway in the valve element. The hollow housing is arranged to produce peripheral pressure on the valve element to facilitate its closure.

A vehicle-straightening bench (20) is utilized to apply pulling forces to a damaged vehicle chassis to restore the damaged chassis to an original configuration. The bench includes a vehicle platform (22) with a carriage track (24) having a plurality of carriage assemblies (100) movably received by the carriage track (24). Each carriage assembly (100) supports a pulling assembly (200) for applying the pulling forces. A trapezoidal carriage body (102) of the carriage assembly (100) rolls in the carriage track (24), and the carriage assembly also includes a tower positioning mechanism (104) to hold the pulling assemblies (200) in place while the carriage body (102) is are rolled on the track (24). The carriage assembly (100) also includes a locking mechanism (106) to lock them in place during a vehicle a pull. A force arm (206) is extended between the pulling mechanism (200) and the platform (22), so that the carriage assembly (100) is not the only force transmission path between the pulling assembly (200) and the bench (20). The automated control system (300) of the bench (20) utilizes two hydraulic pumps(316, 314) to power front and back lifts (65, 64), respectively. Only one of the pumps (314) is used by the pulling assemblies (200). A PLC (308) and a remote control (310) are used to control the bench (20).

A needleless device for introducing or withdrawing a fluid to/from the vascular system of a being. The device includes first and second housing sections movably connected with respect to each other and which define a hollow interior in which a pair of resilient valve elements are located. The first housing section includes a first luer fitting for connection to an input line. The second housing section includes a second luer fitting for connection to an output line. A tubular plunger is located within the device and is arranged, when the housing sections are in a first position, to be automatically extended through a first valve element if the input line is connected to the first luer fitting, so that a liquid can be forced from the input line through the device to the output line. When the housing sections are in the first position and the input line disconnected from the first luer fitting, the tubular plunger is retracted out of both valve elements so that the device is fully occluded. The housing sections are movable to a second position with the input line connected to the first luer fitting, whereupon the tubular plunger is extended through both valve elements to provide free fluid communication between the input and output lines.

A shear machine having a blade for cutting successive increments of material from flat sheet work stock has a cutting zone guarded by a curtain of light. Photosensitive means actuates a brake to stop blade motion if an object extends through the light curtain towards the cutting zone. Hold-down mechanism is operated by a lever or the like situated outside of the guarded region to enable the final portion of a sheet of work stock to be manually held in place at the cutting zone without penetrating the light curtain. The plane of the light curtain inclines towards the front of the shear machine enabling the hold-down mechanism control lever or the like to be situated on the machine above the cutting zone where it may be reached without interception of the light curtain by the operator.
