Mold clamping apparatus is disclosed which includes: an electrically-operated movable-platen-driving device of ball-screw type having a first ball-screw shaft supported by one of a movable and a rear platens, a first ball-nut threaded-engaged with the first ball-screw shaft and supported by the other of the movable and rear platens, and a movable-platen driving device for rotating the first ball-screw shaft and nut relative to each other so as to generate a relative longitudinal motion of the first ball-screw shaft and nut so that said movable platen is moved toward and away from a stationary platen to close and open the mold; a pressure-generating cylinder device having a pressure-generating piston moved by the relative longitudinal motion of the first ball-screw shaft and nut in order to generate a hydraulic pressure; and a mold clamping cylinder device adapted to generate a mold clamping force based on the hydraulic pressure applied from the pressure-generating cylinder device; and an engaging device which is operable for connecting a mold clamping ram of the mold clamping cylinder device with the movable platen, for applying the mold clamping force to the movable platen. The method of controlling operation of the apparatus is also disclosed.

A pre-plasticizing injection apparatus operated with a mold clamped by a mold clamping device comprises: a screw device movable toward and away from the mold clamping device and including a heat-plasticizing cylinder having a bore and a screw which rotatably extends through the bore, so that a resin material introduced into the heat-plasticizing cylinder is fed by rotation of the screw to one axial end of the heat-plasticizing cylinder, while being plasticized, and is ejected from the axial end; and a plunger device movable toward and away from the mold clamping device and including a plurality of heating and injecting cylinders and an injection nozzle which is connectable to the mold, each heating and injecting cylinders being operated to store therein the resin material plasticized by the screw device, while being operated to inject the resin material through the injection nozzle into the mold; and a switching valve device which permits the screw device to be connected to at least one of the plurality of the heating and injecting cylinders to supply the resin material from the screw device to the cylinder, while at the same time permitting the injection nozzle to be connected to at least one of the rest of the plurality of heating and injecting cylinders to inject the resin material store in the cylinder through the injection nozzle into the mold. An injection molding method using the injection apparatus is also disclosed.

A screw-in-plunger injection apparatus is provided which is advantageously used for molding either a large-size or a small-size product. The injection apparatus is capable of selectively carrying out a plunger-type injection operation and an inline-screw-type injection operation. In the plunger-type injection operation, an injection plunger 12 and a screw 10 are advanced in an injection cylinder 14, so that a melted resin fed to a storage space provided on the side of one axial end of the injection plunger 12 is injected. In the inline-screw-type injection operation, a surface of the axial end of the injection plunger 12 is held in abutment with the injection cylinder 14, so that the storage space is reduced to provide a reduced storage space to and from which the melted resin is fed by the rotation of the screw and is injected by the movement of the screw in an axial direction thereof.
