    Abstract: Disclosed are cosmetic compositions comprising:(a) from about 0.1% to about 50%, based on the weight of the composition, of a film-forming graft copolymer, wherein the copolymer comprises:(i) a backbone exhibiting a T.sub.g of from about 0.degree. C. to about 50.degree. C.; and(ii) one or more hydrophilic grafts attached to the backbone wherein each of the grafts exhibits a T.sub.g of from about 50.degree. C. to about 200.degree. C., andwherein the average molecular weight of each of the grafts is greater than about 1000; and(b) from about 50% to about 99.9%, based on the weight of the composition, of a suitable carrier.The compositions provide good wear properties and are suitable for use in a variety of cosmetic applications, such as facial moisturizers, foundations, lipsticks, mascaras, nail polishes and the like. In a preferred embodiment, the compositions are in the form of a nail polish which, when applied to nails, exhibit excellent long wear properties.

    Abstract: The present invention relates to rinse-off hair care compositions that leave a low residue on the hair. These compositions have good hair style retention properties and have a natural, non-sticky feel upon the hair. These compositions comprise a hydrophobic copolymer component having a drying coefficient of less than about 3% and a carrier suitable for application to the hair. The copolymer component further comprises a hydrophobic copolymer and a volatile hydrophobic solvent. The copolymer has a cohesive breaking strength of greater than about 20 kg.sub.f /cm.sup.2, an adhesive strength of less than about 30 kg.sub.f /cm.sup.2, a cohesive breaking strain of less than about 100%, wherein the ratio of said cohesive breaking strength to said adhesive strength is greater than or equal to about 1.

    Abstract: The present invention relates to hair styling compositions and in particular to hair spray compositions. These compositions comprise a silicone containing adhesive copolymer, having a weight average molecular weight from about 10,000 to about 5,000,000, and a solvent for said copolymer selected from the group consisting of water, ethanol, n-propanol, isopropanol, and mixtures thereof. The spray compositions, when dried, have a cohesive strength of greater than about 0.5 kgf/mm.sup.2, a total energy absorption per unit volume of greater than about 0.55 kgfmm/mm.sup.3 and , preferably an impact strength of greater than about 7000 ergs. The hairspray embodiments of the present invention preferably provide improved removeability from hair as defined by a hair stiffness value of from 0 to about 3.5 (0 to 4 scale) and a hair flaking value of from 0 to about 3.5 (0 to 4 scale) as determined by the removeability methodology defined herein. The instant invention also relates to a method of styling and/or holding hair comprising the step of applying to the hair an effective amount of the above compositions.

    Abstract: Disclosed is an improved method of making hydrophobic and hydrophilic graft polymers, which method comprises the steps of (a) reacting copolymerizable monomers to form an organic polymeric backbone having a weight average molecular weight of from about 15,000 grams/mole to about 200,000 grams/mole and a plurality of organic halide moieties covalently bonded to the polymeric backbone and pendant from the polymeric backbone and then, without a separate purification or isolation step; (b) reacting copolymerizable monomers with the organic halide moieties of the polymeric backbone by atom transfer free radical polymerization in the presence of a catalytic amount of a Cu(I) salt or other transition metal species complexed to a ligand suitable for solubilizing the salt in the reaction mixture to form a plurality of polymeric side chains covalently bonded to the polymeric backbone and pendant from the polymeric backbone and having a weight average molecular weight of from about 500 grams/mole to about 200,000 grams/mole, wherein the polymeric back bone and the plurality of polymeric side chains form hydrophilic and hydrophobic graft polymers having a weight average molecular weight of from about 16,000 grams/mole to about 10,000,000 grams/mole.
