Disclosed are double-spiro organic compounds and an organic electroluminescence (EL) device using the same. The double-spiro organic compounds are configured to have at least three planar and substantially linear moieties, such that one planar moiety is located between two neighboring planar moieties and that the intervening planar moiety shares an atom with each of the two neighboring planar moieties. The double-spiro compounds generally have high melting point above about 300 degree C. and low crystallinity, which provide thermal stability to the organic EL devices. These organic compounds have good sublimability. They also have light-emitting, hole-injecting, hole-transporting, electron injection, electron-transporting properties and characteristics, which are favorable in the organic EL devices.

A technique is described for the preparation of conjugated arylene and heteroarylene vinylene polymers by thermal conversion of a polymer precursor prepared by reacting an aromatic ring structure with an aqueous solution of an alkyl xanthic acid potassium salt. In this processing sequence the xanthate group acts as a leaving group and permits the formation of a prepolymer which is soluble in common organic solvents. Conversion of the prepolymer is effected at a temperature ranging from 150.degree.-250.degree. C. in the presence of forming gas. Studies have shown that electroluminescent devices prepared in accordance with the described technique evidence internal quantum efficiencies superior to those of the prior art due to the presence of pinhole free films and therefore permit the fabrication of larger area LED's than those prepared by conventional techniques.

The present invention is directed to organic materials that have the ability to double or triple the frequency of light that is directed through the materials. Particularly, the present invention is directed to the compound 4-[4-(2R)-2-cyano-7-(4'-pentyloxy-4-biphenylcarbonyloxy)phenylheptylidene)phenylcarbonyloxy]benzaldehyde, which can double the frequency of light that is directed through the compound. The invention is also directed to the compound (12-hydroxy-5,7-dodecadiynyl) 4'-[(4'-pentyloxy-4-biphenyl)carbonyloxy]-4-biphenylcarboxylate, and its polymeric form. The polymeric form can triple the frequency of light directed through it.

Disclosed are new organometallic complex molecules having light-emitting and electron-transporting characteristics. Also disclosed is organic EL (electroluminescent) devices using these organometallic complex molecules as electron-transporting materials. The organometallic complex molecules are used to form a light-emitting layer with or without doping of another light-emitting material. The organometallic complex molecules can also be used in an electron-transporting layer of the organic EL device. The organic EL devices incorporating the organometallic complex molecules have high thermal stability.
