Although a chelating agent solution having radioactive contaminants is solidified by mixing with cement and then stored, a vast storage place is required for storing an enormous amount of chelating agent solution. When such a chelating agent solution is treated with an ion-exchange resin, a large amount of ion-exchange resin is required, and a large amount of ion-exchange resin having radioactive contaminants is produced. The present invention thus provides a method of treating a chelating agent solution having radioactive contaminants, which can significantly decrease the amount of the chelating agent solution having radioactive contaminants, and which, when an ion-exchange resin is used, can significantly decrease the load on the ion-exchange resin without producing a large amount of ion-exchange resin having radioactive contaminants. In this method, a chelating agent solution having radioactive contaminants is electrolyzed by a direct current to produce various gases and eliminate the chelating property, a holding agent such as a coagulant-precipitant or a metal scavenger, which holds metal ions to form a water-insoluble substance, is then added to the chelating agent solution to form an insoluble substance which is then filtered off, and the filtrate is treated with an ion-exchange resin. The produced purified water may be collected, or a chelating agent may be added to the purified water to form a chelating agent solution used for decontaminating a radioactive contaminated substance.

A method and apparatus for decontaminating a substance contaminated with radioactivity, in particular, shot blasting grit contaminating with radioactivity. The method comprises: contaminated substance washing the substance to be decontaminated with chelate liquid; draining the chelate liquid; raising the temperature of the substance to a level not lower than the boiling point of a solvent by means of hot air; supplying the solvent to the substance and rapid by vaporizing the solvent; removing the remaining chelate fluid liquid by the force of the vaporization and draining and drying the substance. The apparatus comprises: a decontamination vessel rotatable in a main vessel which has a spray device, the decontamination vessel having a multitude of pores in its outer periphery; a solvent supply device communicating with the spray device and a solvent filtering device communicating with the main vessel, provided in a way to allow circulation of liquid; a purifying device for obtaining a rinse solvent; a chelate liquid supply device in communication with the spray device; a chelate liquid filtering device connected with the main vessel and communicating with the chelate supply device; an electrolytic processing device for regenerating the chelate liquid and communicating with the chelate liquid supply device; and a hot air supply device communicating with the main vessel.

A method of effectively decontaminating a substance contaminated with radioactivity, in particular, shot blasting grit contaminated with radioactivity, and a decontaminating apparatus which makes it possible for a single apparatus to perform all of the decontamination processes without moving the contaminated substance from one apparatus to another for each process, thereby realizing reduction in the installation space and achieving an improvement in operational efficiency. A solution composed of a chelating solution and/or an organic acid is applied to radioactive metals to form a radioactive metal solution. The metal solution is increased in its electrical conductivity by addition of an alkaline agent, followed by electrolysis by an electrolyzer to thereby convert metal ions in the metal solution to hydroxides of low solubility and to separate the hydroxides as a filter cake by subsequent filtration. The filtrate is irradiated with ultraviolet rays for further decomposition of remaining organic matter and then filtered by a device using reverse osmosis. The resultant filtrate is recycled as clean water for use for a chelating solution and electrolytic solution, or is discharged. The metal ions precipitated by treatment with the alkaline agent prior to electrolysis as matter of low solubility is separated from the filtrate which is thereafter electrolyzed.
