The present invention relates to a light, biodegradable, organic pigment and filler, and a method of manufacturing it. According to the present invention, a solution comprising a starch derivative is first prepared by dissolving the starch derivative into a suitable solvent, and, after that, the solution is brought into contact with a non-solvent to precipitate the starch derivative from the solvent, and, as a result, a dispersion is obtained, one which comprises a precipitate consisting of starch derivative and a liquid phase formed of the solvent and the non-solvent, after which the solvent is removed from the liquid phase and the precipitate is separated from the non-solvent and recovered. The present invention can be used to manufacture both a product comprising 100-300 nm spherical particles, which is suitable for use as a pigment, and a coral-like, porous product which is particularly suitable as a filler.

The invention relates to a new process for preparing polymer dispersions. According to the invention, a mixture is first formed of a polymer component, a plasticizer, dispersion auxiliaries and water, the mixture is then heated to approximately 20 to 100° C. in order to form a paste-like composition, and the paste-like composition is dispersed in water. The dispersion obtained according to the invention can be used for coating paper or board, as a primer, as a component in adhesives, paint or lacquer, and it is also suited for the manufacture of cast films and for use as a binder in materials based on cellulosic fibers.

The invention concerns a hydroxypropyl starch ester (HPS ester), compositions containing it, and a process for the preparation thereof. According to the invention, the molar substitution in the HPS ester is 2 at the most and the substitution degree in the ester group is at least 1. The HPS ester is prepared by hydroxypropylating a starch-containing base material in an aqueous alkanol medium. A starch component can be prepared of the HPS ester containing 90 to 60% by weight HPS ester and 10 to 40% by weight of a plasticizer. Compositions which are suited for, e.g., coating board or paper and for use as a component in labelling adhesives or paint, can be made from the starch component by combining it with auxiliaries known as such within the polymer and plastics technology.

The invention relates to a procedure, to a grafted starch derivative produced by this procedure and method of using it. In the procedure a starch or starch derivative is graft-copolymerized with a cyclic ester, producing a starch derivative grafted with an aliphatic polyester. The procedure can be implemented as mass polymerization without the use of a solvent or other medium. The grafted starch derivative produced can be used as a component in hot-melt adhesives and as an impermeable coating for paper and cardboard.

In the method, a substrate is taken, a printing ink containing a starch derivative in a solution form is printed on at least a selected first area and at least a selected second area is left unprinted, the printing ink is allowed to dry, in such a way that the starch derivative form a thermoplastic film in the said first area on the surface of the substrate, and an optically detectable marking is hot-pressed into the film. A process for manufacturing transglycosylation products. According to the process, a starch derivative is reacted at acidic conditions with an alkanol containing 1-6 hydroxyl groups and the reaction product is recovered as such or it is subjected to further processing. According to the method, the transglycosylation reaction between the starch derivatives and the alkanol is carried out in a reactive extrusion process, whereby the reaction can essentially be performed in the absence of liquid media at high yield. The invention also relates to new transglycosylation products of starch derivative, containing anions derived from a phosphorus-containing acid, which are chemically bonded to the product.

A fibrous product, the absorption and desorption properties of which have been improved and which comprises a fibrous substrate which has, on at least one of it surfaces, a small quantity of a modified starch, and a method of producing it. According to the present invention, onto at least one surface of the fibrous product is applied 0.01-1.0 g/m2 of starch ether ester, anionic starch ester, or starch ether or ester, from a diluted aqueous solution or aqueous dispersion. By means of the present invention it is possible efficiently to reduce the absorption of printing ink into a surface to be printed. Consequently, the desired density is achieved with a smaller printing ink quantity and, at the same time, harmful print-through of imprints is reduced.
