    Abstract: A steering device includes a first housing, first and second cables, and first and second sheaths. The first housing includes a first part that supports a rotatable first cable pulley, and a second part that is disposed for relative displacement with respect to the first part. The first cable is at least partially wound on the first cable pulley in a first direction of rotation. The second cable is at least partially wound on the first cable pulley in a second direction of rotation.     Abstract: A vehicle steering control device is provided that suppresses changes in the steering force accompanying the shock transmitted from the road surface during the steering wheel return operation. The vehicle steering device is a steer-by-wire steering device where a steering wheel receiving the steering input which is transmitted electronically to the steering unit which turns steered road wheels of the vehicle.     Abstract: An apparatus for use with a vehicle dynamic characteristic control system employing a vehicle speed sensor, a steering handle position sensor and a steering handle neutral position sensor to control the dynamic characteristics of an automotive vehicle. The vehicle speed sensor is sensitive to vehicle speed for producing a vehicle speed signal indicative of a sensed vehicle speed. The steering handle position sensor is sensitive to steering handle position for producing a steering handle position signal indicative of a sensed steering handle position. The steering handle neutral position sensor is sensitive to steering handle position for producing a steering handle neutral position signal having a first level when the sensed steering handle position is in a predetermined neutral range and a second level when the sensed steering handle position is out of the predetermined neutral range. A steering handle neutral position is estimated based upon the steering handle position signal and the steering handle neutral position signal. A steering angle, which corresponds to an absolute value of a difference of the sensed steering handle position from the estimated steering handle neutral position, is calculated. A failure signal is produced to indicate that at least one of the steering handle position sensor and the steering handle neutral position sensor is subject to failure when the calculated steering angle is equal to or greater than a predetermined value and when the vehicle speed is held above a predetermined value normal for vehicle running in an urban area for a predetermined interval of about 60 seconds.

    Abstract: A fail-safe vehicle rear wheel steering control system includes a hydraulic actuator for steering the rear wheels, an electromagnetic control valve for controlling fluid pressure of the actuator in accordance with a control signal, and a controller for controlling the rear wheel steer angle by producing the control signal. This fail-safe control system is characterized by a fail-safe cutoff valve disposed between the actuator and the control valve, and a fail-safe controller independent from the main controller. When the main controller or the control valve fails, the fail-safe controller brings the fail-safe valve to a closed position, and therefore, the fail-safe valve prevents an abrupt change of the rear wheel steer angle, and instead gradually allows a decrease of the rear wheel steer angle to zero by allowing a gradual leakage of the oil under pressure from the actuator.
