摘要: Artificial muscles comprising a body of dielectric elastomer, wherein the body contains a pair of microfluidic networks are presented. Each microfluidic network includes a plurality of channels fluidically coupled via a manifold. The channels of the microfluidic networks are interdigitated and filled with conductive fluid such that each set of adjacent channels functions as the electrodes of an electroactive polymer (EAP) actuator. By using the manifolds as compliant wiring to energize the electrodes, artificial muscles in accordance with the present disclosure mitigate some or all of the reliability problems associated with prior-art artificial muscles.

摘要: Multiplexed fiber optic sensors are able to monitor a multitude of sensor positions along an optical fiber from a single interrogation point. A long-standing goal is to increase the length of fiber and the number of multiplexed sensors without significantly compromising performance or increasing the size, weight, power and cost of the fiber and interrogation system. A technique is provided for performing extremely long-range, multiplexed fiber optic strain sensing in an efficient manner. This technique utilizes a serial optical frequency comb based interrogation system to probe an array of sensors placed along a single optical fiber.

摘要: A microwave single pixel imager apparatus and method of using same. Sampling a targeted scene includes the following. A plurality of modulated antenna patterns is generated using a reflectarray. A plurality of antenna temperatures respectively corresponding to the plurality of modulated antenna patterns is measured. A retrieved scene corresponding to the sampled targeted scene is generated. Generating a retrieved scene corresponding to the sampled targeted scene includes the following. The plurality of modulated antenna patterns and the corresponding plurality of antenna temperatures are fed into a compressive sensing imaging algorithm.

摘要: A method of training a machine learning model to predict seafloor ripple geometry that includes receiving one or more input values, each input value based on an observation associated with ocean wave and seafloor conditions, and preprocessing the one or more input values. The method includes generating a training data set based on the preprocessed data set, splitting the training data set into a plurality of folds, and training via stacked generalization the machine learning model by performing a cross validation of each fold of training data based on at least one deterministic equilibrium ripple predictor model and on at least one machine learning algorithm. The method may include generating via the trained machine learning model, a set of one or more seafloor ripple geometry predictions, and performing Bayesian regression on the set of one or more seafloor ripple predictions to generate a probabilistic distribution of predicted seafloor ripple geometry.

摘要: Optical frequency combs are used for a wide range of applications, some of which require precise control of the amplitude and phase of individual comb teeth. A technique is provided for tooth-level optical frequency comb control. A frequency comb may include a plurality of comb teeth that are separated from one another by a comb frequency spacing. This technique includes generating a train of control pulses, each of the control pulses being frequency-locked to a corresponding tooth of an optical frequency comb to be controlled. The tooth-level control of the frequency comb is enabled via stimulated Brillouin scattering using the train of control pulses.

摘要: A method for activating implanted dopants and repairing damage to dopant-implanted GaN to form n-type or p-type GaN. A GaN substrate is implanted with n- or p-type ions and is subjected to a high-temperature anneal to activate the implanted dopants and to produce planar n- or p-type doped areas within the GaN having an activated dopant concentration of about 1018-1022 cm−3. An initial annealing at a temperature at which the GaN is stable at a predetermined process temperature for a predetermined time can be conducted before the high-temperature anneal. A thermally stable cap can be applied to the GaN substrate to suppress nitrogen evolution from the GaN surface during the high-temperature annealing step. The high-temperature annealing can be conducted under N2 pressure to increase the stability of the GaN. The annealing can be conducted using laser annealing or rapid thermal annealing (RTA).

The annular sidewall and endcap define an fluid chamber between an inlet and the nozzle, and flow from the inlet to the nozzle is at least partially directed through passageways between the vanes, and the flow is imparted with swirling motion from the vanes.

摘要: Disclosed is a method of decontamination by exposing a zirconium oxy(hydroxide) aerogel to a liquid, vapor, or gaseous sample suspected of containing a phosphonate compound. The aerogel may be doped with Fe3+ ions, Ce3+ ions, or SO42− ions. The aerogel may be made by: providing a solution of ZrCl4; FeCl3, CeCl3, or Zr(SO4)2; and a solvent; adding a cyclic ether to the solution to form a gel; infiltrating the gel with liquid carbon dioxide; applying a temperature and pressure to form supercritical fluid carbon dioxide; and removing the carbon dioxide for form an aerogel.

摘要: Hybrid composite materials including carbon nanotube sheets and flexible ceramic materials, and methods of making the same are provided herein. In one embodiment, a method of forming a hybrid composite material is provided, the method including: placing a layer of a first flexible ceramic composite on a lay-up tooling surface; applying a sheet of a pre-preg carbon fiber reinforced polymer on the flexible ceramic composite; curing the flexible ceramic composite and the pre-preg carbon fiber reinforced polymer sheet together to form a hybrid composite material; and removing the hybrid composite material from the lay-up tooling surface, wherein the first flexible ceramic composite comprises an exterior surface of the hybrid composite material.
