Pixels in an array of image sensor pixels contain photo-sensors and circuits having inputs connected to the photosensors. The circuits have feedback loops for reducing fixed pattern noise in the array. Output from each pixel is used to latch a multibit counter value supplied by a global counter. Each feedback loop preferably includes a pair of alternately-toggling switching transistors to minimize unwanted charge injection. An image sensor according to the invention can be used for, e.g., motion sensing.

Successive images of the object are recorded at various object-to-lens distances, and a program is used to select the image stored in memory which is closest to be in focus. The program could be stored either in static or dynamic memory. In a representative embodiment, this image is selected by computing image contrast values obtained using a focus function. The image corresponding to the largest focus function value is selected as the one closest to being in focus.

A portable capture device, such as a hand held document scanner or digital camera, that receives voice commands for operation control is disclosed. Commands such as “scan”, “save”, “delete”, “left”, “zoom in”, and “send” are illustrative, where the capture device will perform the predetermined functions associated with the command names. In one embodiment, the portable capture device trains itself to recognize the user's spoken commands through voice analysis software. The voice analysis software may be located within the capture device, or on a host computer system and accessed by the capture device while tethered to the host computer system. The capture device has an audio input/output system under the control of a controller. Upon receiving a voice control input command, the controller saves the digitized voice input in dynamic memory. The controller then compares the command received with the commands stored in a command recognition table held in static memory.

Disclosed is an optical disk handling system, called an autochanger, having two control systems to provide the six motions necessary to move optical disk cartridges from storage holding cells to an optical drive. Whenever the mechanisms are being moved, the control systems monitor the progress of the movement, and should the control system detect an error conditon, a state update flag is changed to prevent further updates of the state of the system. With state updates disabled, the control system will stop all mechanisms and prevent further movement of the mechanisms. When the operation appears complete, an error recovery software function is called. When the error recovery software detects that the state update flag is in an error condition, error recovery is initiated. After the mechanism's state has been established, error recovery movement is started, based on the operation that was being performed at the time of the error, and the state of the machine at the time of the error. The type operation being performed is saved in non-volatile memory, so that the type of operation will be saved should electrical power fail during the operation. Therefore, after power is restored, power fail error recovery can perform error recovery based on the type of operation being attempted at the time power was lost.
