A method comprising preparing an aqueous slurry comprising a fibrillated acrylic fiber, dilution hydroforming the slurry into a sheet, saturating the sheet with a saturant, wherein the saturant comprises a carboxylated styrene-acrylate copolymer and a fluoropolymer, drying the sheet, and providing the sheet for use as insulation on an electrical conductor.

A paper composite includes activated carbon fibers and inorganic fibers bound together by an organic latex binder. Such a ceramic paper is useful in a variety of applications and is particularly useful as a filter media in the filter unit of an inflator in an automotive airbag. The filter media is particularly suitable for use with non-azide generants within an airbag inflator.

The binder system initially includes organic materials as well as the silica fibers, however, the organic materials are burned out of the ceramic paper. A fire protection material is provided for protecting electrical cables and components. The material comprises an endothermic-reactive insulating fibrous material including an inorganic endothermic filler which undergoes multiple endothermic reactions between the range 100.degree. C. and 750.degree. C.; inorganic fiber material; and an organic polymer binder. The weight ratio of endothermic filler to inorganic fiber is preferably in the range of 0.25 to 3.0. The fire protection material is in the form of semi-rigid or rigid board or may be moulded into sections.

Improved inorganic ceramic papers comprising heterogeneous grades of ceramic fibers, namely small, high surface area fibers and at least one larger, lower surface area ceramic fiber are bonded into a matrix with the aid of an inorganic binder system having at least one metal oxide with an average particle size below 200 nm. Multiple different grades of inorganic ceramic fibers and small particle size inorganic binders impart good tensile strength and flexibility characteristics in the same sheet.
