The present invention provides a paper sheet identifier device, which includes a main board for operating common processes independent from specific notes and sub-boards in parallel operation, allowing sub-boards connected to the main board to be added or replaced in accordance with the type and number of denomination of notes in a country along with the authentication method. The present invention improves the processing speed by parallelizing the identification processes, and the efficiency of updating the device specification when a new note is issued.

In a discrimination apparatus of the invention, a banknote or another paper as an object of discrimination is irradiated with ultraviolet radiation from an array of multiple ultraviolet-emitting LEDs. The ultraviolet radiation passes through a visible radiation block filter and is focused onto a preset site of the banknote by a lens. Multiple photodiodes are used to measure the transmitted light of ultraviolet radiation and the fluorescence, which is excited by the ultraviolet radiation from the banknote. The discrimination apparatus of the invention discriminates counterfeit banknotes from genuine banknotes, based on the observed pattern of the transmitted light over a preset range of the banknote. The technique of the invention desirably enhances the accuracy of discrimination in the discrimination apparatus that discriminates counterfeit banknotes from genuine banknotes.

The technique of the present invention enhances the stability of paper material identification of sheets. To achieve the above purpose, both short-wavelength light in the range of 370 nm and long-wavelength light in the range of 420 to 1000 nm are irradiated to paper to be identified in identifying the paper material. The identification is carried out, based on the difference in absorbance of the paper, which is obtained for each irradiated light. The absorbance of the paper varies according to the paper material, thereby enabling the identification of the paper material free from influence, which are caused by differences in manufacturing process, such as shading patterns. In addition, the simultaneous use of the short-wavelength light and the long-wavelength light declines influence on the absorbance, which are caused by environmental factors, such as humidity and deterioration of sheets, thereby resulting in stable identification of the paper material.
