Abstract: An anode electrode 10 is composed of a straight elongated cylindrical body, and the outer periphery of the cylindrical body is covered with a dielectric body 12. Further, a cathode portion 20 has a straight semicylindrical shape. A cathode 25 surrounds the anode, and the anode and cathode are disposed parallel to each other in the longitudinal direction. Further, the cathode comprises a cathode wire group 16. Both ends of the cathode wire group are fixed to both ends 20D in the longitudinal direction of the semicylindrical body constituting the cathode portion, so that a plurality of wires become parallel to each other. A reflective surface for reflecting irradiation in a vacuum ultraviolet region is formed on the surface 20S of the cathode portion at the side facing the anode.

Abstract: A barrier discharge lamp wherein an ultraviolet radiation flux is emitted by a working gas confined between two coaxial silica tubes connected at both ends. The gas is subjected to electrical pulses supplied by a generator and applied between an inner and an outer electrode including a conductive window. The cooling is provided by a driven air flow, in particular in the tube, by a fan. Its efficacy is enhanced by a radiator associated with the inner electrode, and by a convective working gas flow. The flow is provided not only around the tube in the vicinity of the electrodes, but in an axial plane with channels on either side of the tube at both ends thereof spaced apart from at least one of the electrodes. The invention is applicable to industrial processes and medical treatments using ultraviolet radiation with very small spectral width, and for treating psoriasis and vitiligo.

Abstract: An apparatus for providing power to a gas discharge lamp comprises a storage capacitor and an ignitron switch coupled through a primarily parasitic first inductor to a parallel combination of a diode assembly and a second inductor in series with a gas discharge lamp. The second inductor is selected to optimize the energy transfer from the capacitor to the gas discharge lamp. During a first interval determined by the time constant of the series combination of a storage capacitor, a first inductor, and a second inductor, the diode assembly is not conducting and a forward sense current builds in the first and second inductors. During a second interval determined by the interaction of the two parallel circuits driving the gas discharge lamp, during which the diode array is conducting, the smaller reversed sense current flowing in the first inductor and a larger forward sense current flowing in the second inductor add, thereby generating a unipolar, forward sense, single pulse current output for the generation of optical energy by a gas discharge lamp.
