摘要： A multiple-position switch is actuated by a throttle pedal that is spring-loaded for retraction from an engine idling position through a series of three successive retracted positions. At the first of the three retracted positions the multiple-position switch terminates combustion in the engine to create a light braking effect which is primarily the result of friction losses in the various moving parts of the engine and vehicle. At the second retracted position of the throttle the switch is effective to create engine braking action by holding the exhaust valves of the engine continuously in slightly open position. At the third retracted position of the throttle pedal the switch operates a butterfly valve in the exhaust manifold of the engine to provide back pressure in the manifold, the additional braking effect by the back pressure unexpectedly increasing the effectiveness of the braking effort by the partially open exhaust valves.

摘要： A filter for engine coolant in an engine cooling system comprises a filter base connected to a coolant conduit and a filter body which is detachable from the base for replacement. Check valves are carried in the base filter inlet and outlet passageways so that the filter is replaced without coolant losses. A pressure differential is created across the filter assembly so that part of the coolant flowing through the conduit is forced through the filter. In one embodiment, the filter includes a ram tube and an ejector tube for creating the pressure differential. In another embodiment, a flow restricting orifice is provided in the conduit between the filter inlet and outlet passageways.

Gear shift control units may be mounted on the basic transmission assembly interchangeably to provide gear ratios selected from the 32 overall ratios to transform the basic transmission assembly into anyone of five, six, seven, eight, nine, 10, 11, 12, 13 and 15 speed transmissions, there being a family of transmissions available in each category.

摘要： A cab for a highway truck or tractor is disclosed in which a sleeping compartment including a sleeper bunk assembly is located between a ceiling of the driver''s compartment and the roof of the cab. A bunk assembly for highway vehicles is disclosed including frame members connected to the vehicle by resilient support structures for enabling relative movement of the bunk vertically with respect to the vehicle and thereby dampening vertical shock loads. A mattress-supporting pallet extends between the frame members and second support structures are located between the pallet and the frame. These support structures enable motion of the pallet in forward and rearward directions in the vehicle so that shock loads from pitching are minimized.
