A data storage disk cartridge having a dual housing structure includes an inner housing that contains a disk, and an outer housing that contains the inner housing. The inner housing is at least partially removable from the outer housing for insertion into a disk drive. The outer housing remains external to the disk drive, however, except for a portion that is inserted into the drive to provide a docking channel for retraction of the inner housing. A shutter on the inner housing covers a portion of the disk, but is manipulable by the disk drive to uncover the disk and allow drive access. The dual housing structure of the cartridge is capable of significantly improving disk and drive reliability, particularly for recording applications that require higher areal recording densities, such as near field optical recording. In particular, the disk cartridge reduces the accumulation of debris on the disk and drive components. The dual-housing disk cartridge provides a system of partially redundant barriers that significantly reduce the possibility of debris accumulation. The barriers form a hierarchy of cleanliness that stands between the outside environment and the disk and drive components. Consequently, in a preferred mode, the disk is never exposed to the outside environment. The reduced amounts of debris contribute to more consistent optical and mechanical performance of the disk and drive, and thereby enhance data storage reliability.

The data storage cartridge includes a shell defined by a cover and a base, within which a disc and the restraining mechanism are disposed. The restraining mechanism operates to restrain the central portion of the data storage disc against the shell when the data storage disc is in a non-operating position. When the data storage disc is in an operating position, the restraining mechanism is disengaged from restraining the disc by the drive spindle independent of a shutter mechanism.

The present invention provides an improved actuator arm assembly including scalloped locking flanges with indentations for longitudinal, perpendicular, and torsional support, an injection molding for precisely locating and fixing a motor coil bobbin, motor coil wires, magnetic latch striker plate, and a crash stop to an actuator arm. Apertures on the actuator arm allow the plastic molding to pass through and lock the actuator arm to the motor coil bobbin together. The magnetic latch striker plate fixably parks the actuator arm in the disc drive assembly. Locating apertures of various shapes in the motor coil bobbin adds further stability and aids in interlocking the plastic molds around the motor coil bobbin. Furthermore, to reduce the height of the disc drive, protect the lead wires from being unduly stressed during the formation of the mold, and increase wire strength to tolerate stresses during testing and assembly, another embodiment of the invention utilizes insulating sleeves around the lead wires. Thus, after forming the lead coils from a molded coil mounted at the rear of an actuator arm, the two lead wires from either end of the coil are led out from the end of the coil, and plastic tubes are slid over the wires up to a point closely adjacent the wound coil. The wound coil is then molded, fixing its shape and holding it in place on the rear of the actuator arm.

An apparatus for securing a printed circuit cable to an actuator arm in a disc drive is provided. The actuator arm has a pivot adjacent the disc of the disc drive and includes a threaded mounting boss on the side of the actuator arm and adjacent thereto connecting pins for connecting the PCC cable electrically to the actuator arm. A single piece alignment bracket incorporating both forks and an anti-rotation tab which cooperate with a slotted actuator arm to prevent a bracket and the PCC that it holds from being moved out of alignment or from rotating the assembly is provided, bonded directly to the PCC and forming the PCC for attachment to the actuator arm. The bracket is bent to form a first, central and third bracket section. The first section contains the forks and anti-rotation tab which are bent away from the first section in opposite directions. The central section contains a hole for mounting to the actuator arm. The third section has an elongated end piece.

An improved air filtration system for a disc drive system having magnetic information storage media located within a sealed housing having upper and lower casing members. The media, as well as the majority of the drives components are primarily secured to the lower casing. The filtration system includes a breather filter and a recirculation filter that are both mounted to the upper casing such that when the drive is disassembled, the air filtration system is automatically removed from the drive to provide the operator with better access to the various drive components. The breather filter is placed above the disc pack in a region of low pressure to maintain the drive at above atmospheric pressure during operation. The recirculation filter is placed in a region having high air flow rates.
