A disc cartridge according to the present invention includes a cartridge body, a shutter and a disc holding portion. The cartridge body includes a disc storage portion, a chucking opening and a head opening. The disc storage portion stores a disc, having first and second sides, therein so that the disc is rotatable in the disc storage portion. The shutter is supported to, and movable with respect to, the cartridge body between the disc and the bottom of the disc storage portion so as to expose or cover the chucking opening and the head opening. The disc holding portion is provided at a portion of the shutter for fixing the disc onto the shutter or the cartridge body synchronously with a movement of the shutter, by pressing the disc toward the bottom of the disc storage portion when the shutter covers the chucking opening and the head opening.

A data storage disk cartridge having a dual housing structure includes an inner housing that contains a disk, and an outer housing that contains the inner housing. The inner housing is at least partially removable from the outer housing for insertion into a disk drive. The outer housing remains external to the disk drive, however, except for a portion that is inserted into the drive to provide a docking channel for retraction of the inner housing. A shutter on the inner housing covers a portion of the disk, but is manipulable by the disk drive to uncover the disk and allow drive access. The dual housing structure of the cartridge is capable of significantly improving disk and drive reliability, particularly for recording applications that require higher areal recording densities, such as near field optical recording. In particular, the disk cartridge reduces the accumulation of debris on the disk and drive components. The dual-housing disk cartridge provides a system of partially redundant barriers that significantly reduce the possibility of debris accumulation. The barriers form a hierarchy of cleanliness that stands between the outside environment and the disk and drive components. Consequently, in a preferred mode, the disk is never exposed to the outside environment. The reduced amounts of debris contribute to more consistent optical and mechanical performance of the disk and drive, and thereby enhance data storage reliability.

Disclosed is a method of making a high density recording medium having a non-magnetic metallic layer on a flexible substrate, wherein said high density recording medium can be used as a floppy disk with greater data storage capacity. The method involves (a) providing a non-magnetic, metallic layer on the first side and the second side of the flexible substrate to form a non-magnetic, metallic flexible substrate, and (b) placing a data recording layer over said non-magnetic metallic layer on said first side and said second side, such that said non-magnetic, metallic flexible substrate comprises a non-metallic core and non-magnetic, metallic layers over both said first and said second sides of said non-metallic core; and wherein said data recording layer comprises a material selected from the group consisting of a magnetic data recording material and a magneto-optical data recording material having a coercivity of at least 1200 Oersted.
