Abstract: A high frequency electrical connector includes a number of input terminals and output terminals that are interconnected by three metallic lead frames mounted on a dielectric spring block. The lead frames comprise flat elongated conductors, each terminating in a spring contact at one end and an insulation displacement connector at the other end. The lead frames are mounted on top of each other and their conductors are generally parallel and close to each other. Selected conductors of the lead frames crossover each other when they are mounted on the spring block but are prevented from making contact with each other at the crossover point. One pair of adjacent conductors are spaced a first distance from each other up to the crossover point, and a second, greater distance from each other beyond the crossover point for a portion of their lengths. The conductors of the one pair cross each other at a second crossover point. The conductors of a second conductor pair are crossed over one of the conductors of a third conductor pair and are closely spaced at the crossover point.

Abstract: An electrical connector 60 achieves improved transmission performance by introducing predetermined amounts of compensation between two pairs of conductors that extend from its input terminals to its output terminals along interconnection paths. Electrical signals on one pair of conductors are coupled onto the other pair of conductors in two or more compensation stages that are time delayed with respect to each other. Illustratively, the electrical connector is a modular jack that is adapted to receive a modular plug 20. Associated with the modular plug and the input of the modular jack there exists a known amount of offending crosstalk A.sub.0, which is approximately canceled by the two or more stages of compensating crosstalk. In a first stage, compensating crosstalk A.sub.1 is introduced between the pairs, and it has a first predetermined magnitude and phase at a given frequency. In a second stage, compensating crosstalk A.sub.2 is introduced between the pairs, and it has a second predetermined magnitude and phase at the given frequency. Multiple compensation stages are needed because, at high frequencies, compensating crosstalk cannot be introduced that is exactly 180 degrees out of phase with the offending crosstalk because of propagation delay. The electrical connector 60 is constructed using a multi-layer printed wiring board 600 having input and output terminals where connection to metallic wires is made. These terminals are interconnected on the printed wiring board by metallic paths that are arranged to provide multiple stages of compensating crosstalk. When the connector 60 is joined to a plug 20, the near-end crosstalk of the combined structure is extremely low at frequencies up to at least 200 MHz.

Abstract: A mounting arrangement between connector modules of a double-sided modular connecting block and polarity sensitive current and voltage limiting circuit protection devices. Connector modules having multiple pairs of insulation displacement connecting (IDC) terminals are insertable into a mounting bracket to form the double-sided connecting block. Exclusionary posts are selectively molded into a front and rear side of the connector modules and correspond to each pair of terminals. The posts on the front of a connector module align and mate with a cavity included on a front-mounted current and voltage limiting protection device. Similarly posts molded in a different location on the rear side of the connector module align and mate with a cavity included in a rear-mounted protection module. The corresponding posts and cavities create an exclusionary key and slot interface which prevents circuit protection devices of improper polarity from being inserted within the wrong side of a connector module. The exclusionary mounting scheme ensures against erroneous installation of circuit protection devices which can disrupt communications and provide inadequate circuit protection.
