The flattening utilizes a conformal parametrization method. The smoothing utilizes a topological smoothing method that utilizes a diffeomorphic smoother. The registering is diffeomorphic. The sensory mapping method may further include a step of processing the functional imaging data to produce topological results.

A bi-directional line switched mesh includes at least one bi-directional line switched ring (BLSR) sharing a common section with a partial bi-directional line switched ring (PBLSR). The partial bi-directional line switched ring has no working traffic along the common section, but may utilize the protection bandwidth associated with the common section of the BLSR in the event of a span failure of the PBLSR. Both electrical and optical PBLSR networks are also disclosed including methods of operating the asymmetrical ring nodes having unconfigured working ports (spans).

A method for analyzing, classifying, and recognizing geometric surfaces is disclosed. Geometric surfaces are treated as Riemann manifolds and the conformal structure corresponding to the surfaces is calculated. The conformal structure of the surface contains the intrinsic geometric information about the surface, but in a much more compact format as compared to other representations. Conformally mapping the surface to a canonical parameter domain, such as a disk, sphere, or plane retains the geometric information of the surface, and renders the calculation of conformal structure much easier. Various applications enabled by such a conformal representation include surface matching, surface cataloging, surface recognition, animation and morphing between surfaces, and other mathematical analysis.

The connection management system includes a validation function to verify the validity of the user defined connections. A graphical user interface comprises a portion of a network management system that controls a network comprising a plurality of coupled computers. The graphical user interface includes a first user input area within a first display window allowing a user to specify a network address for a source node, a second user input area within the first display window allowing the user to specify a network address for a destination node, and a third user input area within a second display window allowing the user to graphically select a connection between the source node and one or more destination nodes in the network. The network management system program includes a first database storing the selected connection as a pending connection, a second database storing the selected connection as an active connection upon activation by the user, and a program module establishing a physical connection between the source and destination nodes upon activation by the user.
