Object of the present invention is to provide a process for producing an amide compound with high efficiency by subjecting an oxime compound to Beckmann rearrangement in a liquid phase under mild reaction conditions. Namely, the invention relates to a process for producing an amide compound such as &egr;-caprolactam by subjecting an oxime compound such as cyclohexanone oxime to Beckmann rearrangement in a liquid phase, characterized in that the reaction is carried out in the presence of (1) a non-fluorine-containing sulfonic anhydride and an N,N-disubstituted amide compound or (2) at least one compound selected from the group consisting of sulfonic acids and anhydrides thereof, an N,N-disubstituted amide compound, and a carboxylic anhydride.

A method for dimerizing an n-butene wherein a catalyst system is used which is produced in situ from an organonickel compound having no nickel-halogen bond, a triarylphosphine and/or a monoalkyldiarylphosphine, an organoaluminum compound and hydrogen. The resulting octenes are excellent as a raw material of alcohols for a plasticizer, and an excellent plasticizer can be obtained from alcohols having 9 carbon atoms produced by using the octenes.

The present invention is directed to a method of dimerizing lower olefins which comprises dimerizing a lower olefins in the presence of a catalyst, wherein the catalyst used comprises a nickel compound, an organic aluminum compound, and a phosphite compound having the general formula (I): ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3, and R.sup.4 are phenyl groups optionally substituted by substituents and may be different from each other, at least two of R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3, and R.sup.4 have a hydrocarbon group as a substituent in the ortho position; A is a divalent aliphatic, alicyclic or aromatic hydrocarbon group which optionally has a substituent; and n is 0 or 1. The present invention is also directed a method of producing alcohol by means of hydroformylating and hydrogenating the newly formed olefins obtained through the said dimerization method of the lower olefins. In the dimerization method of the lower olefins according to the present invention, it is possible to produce in an economic manner olefinic mixtures which are high in activity and low in degree of branching. In addition, the alcohols produced with the said olefins show totally superior performance as the raw material for plasticizers, which are thus valuable in industrial applications.

A process for producing hydroxyalkyl monoacrylate of the present invention, comprises the steps of: reacting acrylic acid or an acrylic acid derivative with alkane diol for esterification and/or transesterification therebetween in the presence of a reaction catalyst comprising a stannoxane compound; recovering said reaction catalyst from a liquid reaction product by extraction; and recycling the recovered reaction catalyst to a reaction system for said esterification and/or transesterification. The process of the present invention is an industrially useful process for producing hydroxyalkyl monoacrylate, which is excellent in reactivity, selectivity for an aimed product, stability of a reaction catalyst used and stability of a reaction substrate and product, and is improved so as to effectively recover and reuse the reaction catalyst.
