An automatic control system for an across-center axial piston pump which destrokes the pump when fluid pressure or flow exceeds a predetermined maximum and returns the pump to its previous setting when fluid pressure or flow falls below the maximum.

An axial piston pump has a servo pump driven by a device which includes an auxiliary shaft driven by the main pump barrel. A spring biasing means on the auxiliary shaft preloads the main pump and the servo pump against their respective port plates and an axial adjustment limits the axial distance the main pump barrel can move relative to its port plate.

An axial piston type fluid energy translating device has fluid passages in the pistons, shoes, swash plate and cam member to conduct fluid from the high pressure port to pockets on the back of the cam member adjacent the cam support. The high pressure fluid in the pockets counter-balances the force applied to the swash plate and cam member by the pistons exposed to high pressure fluid.

Antislack unit for maintaining tension on cable including a sheave with a hub having a periphery against which a cable may bear, a pair of clamping sideplates coacting with the hub periphery to selectively clamp the cable thereon, and spring, plates normally urging the clamping side plates on nonclamping position, and an activator along the hub periphery for moving the clamping sideplates into cable clamping position at the area of the activator.
