Novel flexible hinge assemblies for connecting abutting panel sections of upward acting doors, such as garage doors, are disclosed. More particularly, abutting panel sections of an upward acting door are hingedly connected together economically and in a weather-tight relationship by a flexible hinge assembly which can be easily installed without the use of tools by snapping it into predesigned elongated slots in the abutting panel sections from the rear or interior side of the door. When assembled, a flexible hinge assembly of the present invention provides a smooth, flush back surface on the rear or interior side of an upward acting door and eliminates the unsightly appearance associated with conventional metal hardware heretofore used to hinge abutting panel sections of upward acting doors. Examplary of a novel hinge assembly in accordance with the present invention comprises an elongated flexible hinge having first and second arms connected to a central web formed with a material substantially resistant to flexure fatigue and two elongated slats wherein each arm is adapted to be inserted into one elongated slot along the abutting edge of one abutting panel section and each slat is likewise adapted to be inserted into one of the elongated abutting slots in contact with one of the arms inserted therein to lock the flexible hinge in the elongated slots and hingedly connect together the abutting panel sections for articulation with respect to each other.

Thermoplastic films and laminates are made by extrusion and stretching using differential speed rollers employing a short stretching gap of no more than one inch immediately after the extruded film product is formed. The method and apparatus control the thickness of the stretched film and impart desirable mechanical properties thereto such as film products with a high modulus for handling and suitable tensile for softness.

Thermoplastic film, microporous film, and laminates thereof, are made at high speeds on the order of about 500 fpm to about 1200 fpm. Bond strengths of film and nonwoven laminates are effectively controlled by air cooling devices which cause the air to flow substantially parallel to the extruded web during drawdown and provide a plurality of cooling air vortices to effectively cool the web. Film gauge control is also achieved by the method.

The present invention is directed to a method and apparatus for in-line separation of polymer film and non-woven to compensate for the increased width due to stretching in the cross-machine (CD) direction. Due to the stretching in the cross-machine direction, typically by interdigital rolling or tentering, the width of individual webs is increased. To compensate for the increase in width, the apparatus and method of the present invention is employed to provide for in-line separation of the narrow webs. The apparatus of the present invention may allow for simplicity in threading the device, due to the ability to automatically thread individual turning bars by moving the turning bars across the undeflected path of the web.

Methods of making a breathable material comprise forming a polymer film layer comprising a polymer composition and a filler; bonding the polymer film layer to a fabric layer to form a laminate; and applying a physical manipulation to the laminate to render the polymer film layer microporous such that the WVTR of the resulting breathable material is greater than about 50 g/m2·24 hr; wherein the breathable material has a first length dimension and a first width dimension before said physical manipulation and a second length dimension and a second width dimension after said physical manipulation, wherein the second length dimension is no more than about 2% greater than the first length dimension and the second width dimension is no more than about 2% greater than the first width dimension.

Pin-holes are prevented by creating slack areas along the length of the web where the edges of the non-woven strips meet with the polymer film, pressing the slack areas into the interdigital stretching rollers without stretching the slack areas, and stretching the remainder of the web in a typical manner. The slack regions are formed prior to interdigitation by, for example, formation of a furrow, a fold or a corrugation.
