The UE ceases measuring the characteristic of the second layer that is present within the UE's surroundings in response to detecting both that at least one of the measured surroundings data is less than a predetermined threshold level and that a trend of the measured surroundings data is negative.

Prior to finding a qualified cell, information enabling a first discovered unqualified cell to again be found is saved. After a period of time during which the non-initial cell search procedure has been performed and before the UE's demodulation frequency is beyond acceptable limits of accuracy, the saved information is used to again tune the demodulation frequency based on reading signals from the first discovered unqualified cell. The UE then continues to perform the non-initial cell search procedure.

The apparatus has an orientation sensor that provides an orientation sensor output signal indicative of a spatial orientation of the apparatus. The apparatus also has a display controller coupled to the first and second display areas and to the orientation sensor. The display controller controls the first display area and the second display area in either a first display state of a second display state, with less display activity than the first display state. When a movement of the portable electronic apparatus has been determined from the orientation sensor output signal, one of the first and second display areas is switched from the first display state to the second display state, whereas the other display area is switched from the second display state to the first display state. Specifically, the other display area is first switched from the second display state to the first display state, and then, during a transition time period, both display areas are maintained in the first display state. The transition time period is a function of a speed of the determined movement of the portable electronic apparatus. Accordingly, a UE implementing a user-specific Neighbor Cell List analyzes its radio environment based on received signals and stores information about that environment, including user-preference information that prioritizes cells in the radio environment. The UE can then carry out cell search based on the stored environment and user-preference information.

A method of operating a user equipment, UE, intended to use a service in a wireless communication system having several base stations. The location of the UE is monitored, by the UE, for example with a GPS system or identification of the cell of the corresponding base station. If a problem, such as loss of coverage or call, is imminent or has occurred, information about the location is stored in a memory of the UE. After successful recovery from the problem, the alternative base station used is also stored in the memory. Next time the same location and problem is encountered, the UE uses the previous information for alleviating the problem or perform as fast recovery as possible. In this way, the UE can be operated with less frequent base station searches thereby saving battery, while at the same time sufficient coverage may be obtained.
