    Abstract: Assemblies and techniques are provided for light guides integrated into display devices having front light sources. In one aspect, a light guide can include one or more reflective coatings that are applied or otherwise integrated onto one or more internal surfaces of the light guide. Application of at least one reflective coating can modify the luminance and/or chromaticity of the light guide. The one or more coatings can comprise one or more applied layers of paint, such as a layer of a glossy colored paint and/or a layer of a chrome paints.

    Abstract: A thin border display for an electronic device may comprise an optical assembly that includes a support frame and an electrophoretic display (EPD) structure attached to the support frame in a manner that allows for the display of the electronic device to exhibit a “thin border” or “borderless” look at a periphery of the electronic device. A portion of the EPD structure may at least partly curve around a curved portion of the support frame, the curved portion of the support frame being near the periphery of the support frame. In some embodiments, the EPD structure includes a transparent protective substrate disposed on a rear surface of a flexible backplane substrate within the flat outer region where a driver chip is disposed on a front surface of the flexible backplane substrate. The transparent protective substrate protects the driver chip attachment from being damaged during manufacture.

    Abstract: A cover glass of an electronic device may be inspected for defects and damage such as cracks, fractures, scratches, and chips. The electronic device may be placed in an enclosure with a lighting assembly that emits light to the electronic device, and scattered light from defects and damage of the cover glass is captured by an imaging device. A shutter assembly facilitates the capture of scattered light and reduces the capture of reflected light, which enhances the exposure of defects and damage of the captured image of the cover glass. A mirror facilitates the capture of a side surface of the electronic device.

    Abstract: In some examples, a portable electronic device may monitor onboard sensor information to detect and characterize a fall event. For example, the device may receive acceleration information from one or more accelerometers for determining that the device is falling, and may receive information from one or more gyroscopes for determining an orientation of the device. Based at least in part on the sensor information, the device may determine the fall duration, an estimated fall height, device orientation before during and after the fall, and/or a coefficient of restitution resulting from the device impacting a surface. The device may store the fall information on the device. Further, in some examples, the device may send the fall information to a remote computing device, which may aggregate the fall information from a plurality of the devices, such as for improving or optimizing the design of the devices.
