Both the mold segments and the partitions are oriented essentially in the casting direction. Each hollow top end mold segment comprises a core of a mechanically supporting bar or beam (25a, 25b, 25c, 25d, 25e, 25f, 25′a, 25′b, 25′c, 25′d, 25′e, 25′f) arranged within the hollow mold segment such that it is surrounded by the hollow mold segment. The core exhibits superior mechanical properties in relation to the mold.

The method includes the steps of tapping the molten metal via a tapping hole in the metallurgical vessel, and providing a flow of the molten metal in the metallurgical vessel while tapping via a time-varying electromagnetic field applied to the metallurgical vessel, the flow of the molten metal being such that it constantly moves vortices in the molten metal away from a tapping hole region during the tapping to thereby prevent accumulation of the vortices for vortex formation over the tapping hole. A device for continuously manufacturing a cast strand by continuous casting of liquid metal melt wherein the flow of the liquid metal in the non-solidified portions of the strand is controlled by means of a static or periodic low-frequency magnetic field. A mould adapted to be supplied with the melt includes copper plates (2a,2b) which form a casting mould space with a rectangular cross section, water box beams (3) which are arranged outside the copper plates to support and cool them, and a member (4) holding the mould together. Magnetic field-generating devices, i.e., magnets, are provided close to the mould to generate a static or periodic low-frequency magnetic field which acts in the path of the inflowing melt and divides the primary flow as well as checks any secondary flows arising. Each magnet comprises a front core (5), a rear core and a coil (7). The front core is a fully integral part of the water box beam and the rear core comprises a rear movable part (6b) which is movable in a direction which substantially coincides with the direction of the field.
