Abstract:
A braiding apparatus and method of forming braided product. The braiding apparatus may have one or more former rings having an adjustable inner diameters. The former rings may have a plurality of elements at least radially movable so that the inner diameter may be adjusted. The former ring may also include means to actuate the elements to adjust the inner diameter. The braided product made by the braiding apparatus may be multi-layered without a winding between layers.
Abstract:
A method and device for forming composites using a pre-consolidated tubular braid (i.e., a braid removed from the braiding machine on which it was produced prior to use in further processing) including feeding the pre-consolidated tubular braid over a supporting mandrel, impregnating the braid with a resin using a pressurized resin injection chamber with a mandrel adapted to provide adequate impregnation, feeding the resin saturated braid into a pultrusion die with a mandrel for forming and heating and pulling the cured composite from the die for finishing the end product.
Abstract:
A biaxial braided sleeve braided together in a diamond braid style. The braided sleeve has an outer layer or set of thick, uncrimped strands extending in one helical direction and an inner layer or set of thick, uncrimped strands extending in the other helical direction. Much thinner containment strands hold the thick strands in position. A braided sleeve is thus provided which can have one material on the outside and a different material on the inside. For example, the inside material can be fluorocarbon polymer and the outside material can be fiberglass, providing a bearing liner. The two counter-rotating sets or layers of thick uncrimped strands provide enhanced mechanical properties.
Abstract:
By the present invention method and apparatus is disclosed whereby a triaxial braided composite reinforcing fabric having axial yarns of varying length may be wrapped about a cylindrical shipping spool without deformation of the braided fabric. A tensioning device is interposed between the braiding tool and shipping or storage spool whereby the individual variable length axial yarns are subjected to constant tensioning. As the braided fabric is wound upon a cylindrical shipping spool, a conformable foam layer is interposed between each layer of braided fabric thereby permitting each axial yarn to seek out its own diameter by compressing the layer of conformable foam upon which it is wrapped.

Abstract:
A triaxial braided sleeve in which the axial strands are reinforcing and the bias strands are elastic. Due to the elastic bias strands, the sleeve can be used as the reinforcement in a fiber-reinforced plastic part having a tapered, curved, or other irregular shape.
Abstract:
A method of forming a tapered tubular part including the steps of: providing tows of filaments, the filaments being adapted to fuse together when subjected to combined heat and pressure; braiding the tows of filaments into a sleeve; providing a tapered mold and a matingly tapered mandrel; sliding the sleeve into the mold and securing the sleeve to the mold; forcing the mandrel into the mold to compress the wall of the sleeve and to stretch the length of the sleeve while applying heat to the mold to fuse the filaments of the sleeve together into a tube; cooling the mold; withdrawing the mandrel from the mold and removing the cooled tube from the mold.
Abstract:
A wind turbine blade may include a plurality of longitudinal composite members each having a fiber and resin layer around a predetermined cross-sectional shape and each comprising at least one longitudinal outer surface and at least one longitudinal mounting surface, each of the outer surfaces of the plurality of longitudinal composite members corresponding to a different portion of a desired airfoil shape, the plurality of longitudinal composite members assembled such that the outer surfaces of the composite members form at least a majority of the airfoil shape. An outer skin may be provided. The composite members may be made up of transportable segments. A method of assembly may include transporting the segments to a desired location such as an installation site for assembly of the wind turbine blade at the installation site.
Abstract:
A method of producing an air beam having at least one curved portion, including braiding a sleeve having substantially regularly spaced axial fibers along the circumference thereof, taking-up the braided sleeve using at least one non-cylindrical take-up member, and inserting a gas-barrier tube into the sleeve.
Abstract:
A braided structure produced by strands of a braiding material consisting of multiple yarn ends of multifilament fibers oriented side-by-side or in parallel to form a generally single layer band of yarn ends and treated with a suitable forming material in order to set such orientation. The braiding material can then be used to form strands for producing a braided structure. The braided structure resulting from the braiding material of our invention has a high coverage area and a high width to thickness ratio.
