摘要: A method and apparatus for continuously casting metal strip are provided, in which molten metal is introduced between a pair of parallel chilled casting rolls via an elongate metal delivery nozzle disposed above and extending along the nip between the casting rolls to form a casting pool supported on the rolls and the rolls are contra-rotated to produce the solidified strip. The molten metal is then delivered into a trough of the nozzle through an entry nozzle having an upper inlet end for receiving molten metal from a tundish, and a lower outlet end extending into the trough of the delivery nozzle, and the outlet end of the entry nozzle has a bottom wall, elongated side walls spaced inwardly from the side walls of the delivery nozzle and outlets for molten metal in the side walls.

摘要: Method and apparatus for continuously casting metal strip. 摘要: A metal delivery nozzle (19) for delivery of molten metal to the nip between casting rolls in a twin roll caster to establish a casting pool supported above the nip. The trough (19) defines an open topped trough (61) to receive molten metal from a distributor. The bottom of the trough (61) is closed and the nozzle has side openings (64) and two large end openings (71) for delivery of molten metal from the trough (61) into the casting pool. The side openings (64) are longitudinally spaced circular holes disposed between unperforated end regions (72) of the nozzle.

摘要: A process for electrochemically reducing a metal oxide feed material in a solid state in an electrolytic cell is disclosed. The cell includes a molten bath of electrolyte, an anode, a cathode, and a means for applying a potential across the anode and the cathode. The process is characterised by supplying an amount of electrolyte into the bath that is greater than the amount of electrolyte that is required to replace electrolyte removed from the bath with reduced material and removing molten electrolyte from the bath to maintain the bath height at a required height or within a range of required heights.

摘要: An electrolytic cell for electrochemically reducing metal oxide powders and/or pellets is disclosed. The cell includes a cathode (25) in the form of a plate that has an upper surface for supporting metal oxide powders and/or pellets. The plate is horizontally disposed or slightly inclined and has a forward end and a rearward end and is immersed in an electrolyte bath. The plate is supported for movement so as to cause metal oxide powders and/or pellets on the upper surface of the plate to move toward a forward end of the plate. The cell also includes a means for causing metal oxide powders and/or pellets to move over the upper surface of the plate toward the forward end of the cathode while in contact with molten electrolyte whereby electrochemical reduction of the metal oxide to metal can occur. A method of continuously or semi-continuously reducing metal oxide powders and/or pellets in the cell is also disclosed.

摘要: A process for selectively forming a morphology of reduced material is disclosed. The reduced material, such as titanium, is formed by a process of electrochemically reducing a metal oxide feed material, such as titania, in a solid state in an electrolytic cell containing molten chlorine-containing electrolyte in the cell. The process for selectively forming the morphology of reduced material includes sintering the reduced material and forming a morphology that is susceptible to subsequent washing of retained electrolyte in the reduced material.

摘要: Molten metal is introduced between a pair of parallel casting rolls (16) of a twin roll caster by metal delivery apparatus comprising a distributor vessel (18) and delivery nozzle (19) to form a casting pool (10) above the nip (30) between the rolls (16). The rolls (16) are rotated so as to cast a solidified strip (20) delivered downwardly from the nip (30). Casting of the strip is terminated by stopping the flow of metal to the delivery apparatus (18, 19) and allowing the quantity of molten metal in the delivery apparatus to run down to a reduced quantity at which there is still molten metal in the casting pool and then moving one or both casting rolls laterally to increase the gap between the rolls whereby to interrupt formation of the strip and allow downward discharge of the remaining metal through the increased gap between the rolls.
