A game apparatus and a method using a light source, a convex mirror and an optical sensor, all disposed within a housing, are described. The housing is transparent to the range of wavelengths from the light source and is composed of a low distortion scratch-resistant material. A game board is also used along with retro-reflective elements, such as moveable playing markers or game tokens, cards or regions affixed to and integrated into the game board. A data store stores the locations of the reflective elements and other game-related data, such as data needed to measure a player's score or position in a game or data to provide guided play. The convex mirror is disposed inside the housing such that light reflects from the light source, off the convex mirror, through the housing, and onto the game board. The one or more retro-reflective elements, when placed on the game board, receive light emanated from the light source. The light received by the one or more retro-reflective elements reflects off of the convex mirror and along substantially the same path from which the light was received. The optical sensor receives light reflected from the one or more retro-reflective elements, senses increases and decreases in the intensity of the reflected light, and signals changes in the intensity of the reflected light greater than or equal to a predefined level. A processor, or computer, is responsive to signals from the sensor and the data in the data store.

Two reflectors, which may be mirrors or prisms, are positioned to separate the field of view of a camera lens on the mobile graphical device into a direct field of view and an offset field of view and to record and display the separated fields in a two-paned format on the mobile graphical device. Eye lenses are used to separately view the split images. An integrated housing and cradle receive the mobile graphical device and are coupled to the reflectors and the eye lenses. An area of each pane may be provided to display control icons for three-dimensional viewing, and a control area may be provided out of view on a touch screen for user control.

A unique uncomplicated development methodology is disclosed for the format information on the disc and the programming of the player device providing advantages of achieving strategic video gaming and fast action gaming, exclusively from the manipulation of a user's input during play via six operable navigational buttons. The navigational buttons thus affect the player device selection of video tracks through format information added to image frames of the disc. Numerous benefits are provided including the use of high quality video images and DVD style gaming applications in a low cost system which utilizes inexpensive standard disc media, such game discs are developed at substantially reduced programming cost relative to other game programming technologies.

The audio and video information is formatted for right and left stereo tracks of the CD-DA with the bit map video information being stored on one audio channel and the PCM audio being stored on the other stereo channel. The two channels are interleaved and recorded to the CD-DA in a manner similar to CD-DAs that have only audio information recorded thereon. In the preferred embodiment, a CD-DA disc of generally smaller diameter is utilized with the portable reproducing device such that a device of smaller size is realized. The portable reproducing device includes a housing with a display, one or more outputs for communicating audio information to an external device, such as a speaker, a pivoting cover providing access to a loaded CD-DA, and means control the operation of the portable reproducing device. In operation, the portable reproducing device is operable to read the time-synchronized interleaved audio and video information recorded on the CD-DA, and process a signal representative thereof in an information processor. The processor extracts the audio and video information from the interleaved stereo audio channels and provides an audio signal and video signal to respective audio and video interfaces for reproduction by a speaker and a display.
