The low temperature lumen maintenance is a ratio of (a) lamp lumens at a first number of lamp operating hours to (b) lamp lumens at a reference number of lamp operating hours, when the lamp is operated with a bulb wall temperature of 35° C. or lower.

A photo-therapeutic, electrodeless lamp (10) comprising a closed-loop envelope (12) containing an arc generating and sustaining medium that includes mercury. A phosphor coating (14) is provided on the interior surface of the envelope (12). The phosphor coating is capable of generating a first radiation in response to excitation from 254 nm radiation and provides the first radiation having an energy output in the region of 335-430 nm. This wavelength region is most efficient for the treatment of morphea or scleroderma. The output radiated energy from the lamp in the 335-430 nm region is ≧20,000 μW/cm2. In a preferred embodiment of the invention the phosphor is SrB4O7:Eu, which has a spectral response with a peak between 366-368 nm with a bandwidth of about 18 nm.

A photo-therapeutic, electrodeless lamp comprises a closed-loop envelope containing an arc generating and sustaining medium. A phosphor coating on the interior of the envelope generates visible radiation in response to excitation from 254 nm radiation. The visible radiation has an energy output in the region of 500-800 nm of ≧12,000 μW/cm2.A reflector formed on a portion of the envelope leaves a window for the emission of the visible radiation and concentrates the power requirements. Means are formed with the lamp for supplying RF excitation to generate the 254 nm radiation. The lamp has an effective area that allows easy operator manipulation and good patient access.

A phosphor blend is described wherein the blend consists of a red-emitting rare earth phosphor, a green-emitting rare earth phosphor, and a blue-emitting rare earth phosphor wherein the 50% size of the phosphors is between about 12 to 15 μm. The phosphor blend is incorporated into a fluorescent lamp having an increased efficacy. A dual layer coating may be used to provide an additional increase in efficacy.

The driver circuit includes a rectifier circuit, an energy storage element coupled thereto, a current bleeder circuit coupled thereto, and a switch. The rectifier circuit receives AC input and provides unregulated DC voltage. The switch closes to couple some of the unregulated DC voltage to the energy storage element, and opens to transfer energy to drive the light source. A power factor controller circuit provides an output signal to control the switch. The current bleeder circuit provides supply voltage to the power factor controller circuit within a range and maintains a current flow associated with the AC input that exceeds a predetermined threshold. A constant off-time controller circuit provides a switching frequency control signal to the power factor controller circuit. An EMI filter reduces generated EMI noise.

The lamp contains a phosphor layer having a phosphor blend of three rare-earth-activated phosphors: SrB4O7:Eu, LaPO4:Ce and YPO4:Ce. Preferably, the phosphor blend comprises 25-27% SrB4O7:Eu, 23-26% LaPO4:Ce, and 47-52% YPO4:Ce by weight.
