The present invention provides a surface treatment method for a water-absorbing resin comprising three steps of: 1) a humidifying and mixing step for mixing a base polymer and a surface cross-linking agent solution to obtain a “humidified substance”; 2) a pretreatment step for raising temperature of said humidified substance to obtain a “pretreated substance”; and 3) a surface cross-linking reaction step for cross-linking said pretreated substance to obtain a surface cross-linked “water-absorbing resin”; wherein dew point in the pretreatment step of the above 2) is from 50° C. to 95° C., and temperature of said humidified substance is raised from temperature below the dew point up to a temperature of 10° C. higher than the dew point.

In the method, a catalyst comprising (i) a sparingly water-soluble salt of a hetero poly acid and (ii) a composite oxide containing phosphorus, molybdenum and vanadium is used. Component (i) preferably has the element composition (but excluding oxygen) represented by the general formula AaBbMocWdVe (wherein A is a counter cation, for example cesium, B is the hetero atom of the hetero poly acid, for example silicon, and a, b, c, d and e represent an atomic ratio of the respective elements.), and component (ii) preferably has the element composition represented by the general formula PpMoqVrXsOt (wherein X is for example cesium, and p, q, r, s and t represent an atomic ratio of the respective elements.).

This invention is directed to a setting resin composition comprising (A) a radically polymerizable monomer, (B) a thermoplastic resin soluble or dispersible in said monomer (A), (C) an epoxy resin, (D) at least one polyfunctional carboxylic acid compound selected from said group consisting of polyfunctional carboxylic acids and anhydrides thereof, and (E) an inorganic filler and using said components in proportions such that, based on said amount of said radically polymerizable monomer (A) taken as 100 parts by weight, the amount of said thermoplastic resin (B) is in the range of 5 to 75 parts by weight, that of said epoxy resin (C) in the range of 10 to 100 parts by weight, that of said inorganic filler (E) in the range of 100 to 1,000 parts by weight, and that of said polyfunctional carboxylic acid compound (D) in the range of 0.5 to 4.0 equivalent weights per equivalent weight of said epoxy resin (C), wherein an acid anhydride group is assumed to be bifunctional, an artificial marble using the same and a method for the production of an artificial marble.
