    Abstract: Acrylonitrile is polymerized by itself or with other ethylenically unsaturated copolymerizable compounds in an aqueous medium at pH values below 7 with the aid of per-compounds and sulphur compounds of low oxidation stage, in the presence of heavy metal ions and complex formers for the latter; the polymerization being carried out in the presence of formaldehyde sulphoxylate or formamidine sulphinic acid or an alkali metal salt thereof. Copolymerizable monomers specified are acrylic and methacrylic esters, styrene, vinyl and vinylidene chlorides, vinyl acetate and the CH-acidic compounds and NH-acidic compounds described in Specifications 867,006 and 933,483. Mixtures of copolymerizable monomers may be used, e.g. methyl acrylate+methacrylaminobenzene benzene disulphonimide. Complex formers specified are alkali metal and ammonium fluorides, pyrophosphates and hexametaphosphates, imido triglycolic acid and ethylene diamine p tetraacetic acid. Heavy metal ions specified are those of iron and copper. Catalyst systems specified consist of alkali metal persulphates in admixture with alkali metal or ammonium pyrosulphites, bisulphites or thiosulphates or sulphur dioxide. Also present may be regulators, e.g. mercaptans and dithioglycols. During the course of the reaction further quantities of the various reactants may be introduced into the polymerization system.
