A cellular communication system comprises a core network, a first access network not supporting circuit switched services and a second access network supporting circuit switched services. A user equipment detects that an application using circuit switched communication is initiated and accordingly initiates a reselection from the first to the second access network. The user equipment transmits a location update message to a circuit switch mobile switching centre of the core network which in response notifies a mobility management entity for the first access network that the access network reselection has been initiated. In response to the notification the mobility management entity initiates a change of a routing association from being with the first access network to being with the second access network. The invention may e.g. allow improved circuit switched fallback for a 3rd Generation Partnership Project cellular communication system comprising an access network supporting only packet switched services.

A Multimedia Broadcast/Multicast Service (MBMS) server in a packet data communication system generates and assigns Temporary Mobile Group Identities (TMGIs) to MBMS services, thereby serving as a central repository for the TMGIs. In response to receiving a request to participate in an MBMS service, the MBMS server generates a TMGI. The MBMS server assigns the TMGI to the MBMS service and stores the TMGI in association with information relating to the MBMS service to produce a stored TMGI. The MBMS server further conveys the TMGI to a source of the received request, thereby providing for a distribution of the TMGI to mobile stations subscribed to the MBMS service. The subscribed mobile stations may then use the TMGI to receive data packets associated with the MBMS service.

A communication system is provided that implements an inter-technology SRVCC handoff without the need for an SRVCC indicator. A user equipment (UE) establishes a communication session that comprises a voice component in a packet data network. In response to determining to handoff the session to a target network, the communication system determines that the session comprises a voice component based on a call-type identifier, preferably a QoS Class Identifier (QCI), that is associated with a voice call and further determines that a target network is a circuit switched network based on configuration information maintained in association with the target network. In response to determining that the session comprises a voice component, that the target network is a circuit switched network, and, based on a profile of the UE, that the UE is capable of operation in single radio mode, the communication system determines to implement a SRVCC handoff procedure.

A communication system provides a Multimedia Broadcast/Multicast Service (MBMS) to a roaming user equipment (UE) by receiving, at a first network, a request from the UE to subscribe to an MBMS service and, in response to receiving the request, conveying to the UE a Temporary Mobile Group Identity (TMGI) that is uniquely associated with the MBMS service and the first network. When the first network receives information associated with a registration of the UE with a second network and further receives MBMS data associated with the MBMS service, the first network conveys the MBMS data and the TMGI to the UE via the second network. By using a TMGI that is unique to the MBMS service and the first network, the UEs subscribed to an MBMS service at the second network ignore a notification conveyed to the UE by the second network, thereby preserving a battery life of such UEs.

A Multimedia Broadcast/Multicast Service (MBMS) application server in a packet data communication system produces multiple access control parameters that at least partially identify a storage location of MBMS data and that define when a user equipment may access the stored MBMS data. The multiple access control parameters are then distributed to user equipment (UE) subscribed to the MBMS service. When a subscribed UE fails to receive, or erroneously receives, MBMS data associated with the MBMS service, the subscribed UE uses the distributed access control parameters to determine when and where to access the stored MBMS data.
