    Abstract: Embodiments are directed to a heat pump element comprising: a thin-film polymer or ceramic material within a range of 0.1 microns-100 microns thickness, and electrodes coupled to both sides of the thin-film material to form an electroded active thin-film material, wherein the thin-film material is separated by, and in intimate contact with, a heat transfer fluid in channels within a range of 10 microns-10 millimeters thickness, in which the fluid is capable of being translated back and forth through the element by an imposed pressure field.

    Abstract: A method of making an electrocaloric article is disclosed in which a continuous sheet of an electrocaloric film is bent back and forth to form a plurality of connected aligned segments of electrocaloric film with gaps between film surfaces of adjacent aligned segments. The continuous sheet of electrocaloric film is secured in this with a securing method that includes attaching a spacer to the continuous sheet of electrocaloric film prior to the back and forth bending; or providing a spacer comprising a base and a plurality of projections extending from the base, and inserting the projections into the gaps between the film surfaces of adjacent aligned segments after the back and forth bending; or interweaving a continuous spacer through the gaps between the aligned segments of the electrocaloric film; or attaching an end cap to a plurality of connecting portions of the electrocaloric film between the aligned segments.

    Abstract: A method for manufacturing a detector for sensing, detecting and monitoring environmental hazards and conditions, said method including the printing of an electronic circuit on at least a first side of a flexible, printable substrate; coupling at least two electronic components to the electronic circuit on at least the first side of the flexible, printable substrate; thermoforming the flexible, printable substrate to form at least one detection zone from: (i) at least one side of the flexible, printable substrate having an angle for emitting one of a light or a signal from at least one electronic component; and (ii); at least one side of the flexible, printable substrate having an angle for receiving one of a light or a signal by at least one electronic component; and encapsulating the flexible, printable substrate, forming a detector.
