    Abstract: A variable voltage divider having a ceramic substrate supporting a plurality of resistive paths and comprising an arcuate resistive path disposed between two fixed resistive paths, the fixed resistive paths being abraded to achieve a proper resistance ratio between each of the two fixed resistor paths and the arcuate resistive path, a plurality of terminations, a center collector, and a driver mounted in a center aperture in the substrate and carrying a contactor, the contactor wipingly engaging the collector and the arcuate resistive path. The ceramic substrate is enclosed in a housing and contains registration means for locating the substrate in the housing, the two fixed resistive paths being arcuately disposed about said registration means.

    Abstract: High-voltage circuit arrangement includes a load connected to a power supply of at least 20,000 volts, and a single discrete high-voltage electrical resistor connected to the power supply and load. The high-voltage resistor comprises a spiral resistive path supported on a ceramic substrate which provides a uniform and continuous heat dissipation path between the ends of the resistor. A heat-dissipating mounting member forms an electrical termination for the resistor, rapidly transfers heat away from the substrate, and includes a substrate alignment surface and seat in close proximity to a surface of the substrate. A threaded portion of the heat-dissipating member is useful for mounting the resistor on a supporting surface and insulative means including an insulative jacket surrounds the substrate. High-voltage corona-inhibiting means include an insulative body that extends one-half inch beyond an end of the resistive path and embeds a lead wire connected to the resistive path. The resistive path is a cermet-film-type material having a resistivity of 5 megohms per square, a voltage coefficient of less than 400 parts per million per volt per square, and a voltage withstanding ability of 3,000 volts per inch of resistive path. The resistive path itself comprises an intersticed mass of inert particles and a conductive phase forming an interstitial mass within the intersticed mass. The method includes the steps of positioning the mounting member and substrate at a work station, compressively centering the substrate on the mounting member with a movable platen, controlling the transfer of heat relative to the mounting member, and soldering the mounting member to the substrate.

    Abstract: A variable resistance slide control employs a housing having a front wall and a side wall integral therewith. A dielectric base having a resistance element and a collector element mounted thereon is secured to the housing in spaced parallel relationship to the side wall. A contactor engaging the resistance and collector element is constrained to move with a slider projecting outwardly of the housing through an elongated slot defined by the front wall and the base. The slider comprises a U-shaped section bearing against and interfitting with the front wall, a contactor frame provided with a pair of runners engaging the side wall, and a tolerance compensator limiting lateral movement of the slider. A pair of terminals secure the resistance element to the base and a bowed portion integral with each of the terminals electrically engages the resistance element at the innermost portion of the terminals.

    Abstract: A ceramic substrate supports a plurality of moisture resistant cermet film resistive paths having a uniform temperature coefficient of resistance, a center collector, a contactor wipingly engaging the collector and a resistive path, and a contactor driver having a stub shaft with an enlarged portion thereof bearing against the substrate. Terminations on the substrate comprise conductive pads disposed adjacent to passageways in the substrate and a protective layer of solder deposited over such pads. In a variable voltage divider embodiment, a surge limiting resistive path is provided between the collector and an output termination to reduce the magnitude of high frequency, high potential pulses applied to the output termination of the divider.
