An example method to perform load balancing in a communication network disclosed herein comprises routing a registration request received for a user device in an Internet protocol multimedia subsystem network to a first call processor when the user device is registered with the first call processor and in an active call session with the first call processor, and querying a load balancer to determine whether to assign the user device to at least one of the first call processor or a second call processor when the user device is registered with the first call processor but not in any active call sessions with the first call processor.

    摘要: An apparatus and method are disclosed for processing a communication request from a roaming VoIP terminal. An apparatus that incorporates teachings of the present disclosure may include, for example, a network proxy having a controller that manages a communications interface in a communication system. The controller can be programmed to receive from a Voice over IP (VoIP) terminal a request to communicate with a destination point, wherein the request comprises an identification (ID) of the destination point, an ID of the VoIP terminal, and a media access control (MAC) address of a gateway providing the VoIP terminal communication access to the network proxy, and determine from the MAC address of the gateway and the ID of the VoIP terminal whether the VoIP terminal is roaming outside of a home network. Additional embodiments are disclosed.

An example border element comprises a network interface to receive a VoIP network registration request message from a VoIP endpoint, a catastrophe detector to determine whether a catastrophe has been detected, a backoff time module to compute a backoff time using a priority assigned to the VoIP endpoint and an expected number of VoIP network registration request messages, a recovery module to determine whether the VoIP endpoint is currently registered with the VoIP network, and to send a response message having a header representing the backoff time to the VoIP endpoint when the catastrophe has been detected and the VoIP endpoint is not currently registered with a VoIP network, and a signaling processor to process the VoIP network registration request message when the VoIP endpoint is currently registered with the VoIP network.
